In The Pleasantries is the ‘classic story’ about irrational levels of payment at the Turkish bath-house -‘There Is a Different Time-Scale’. A search on ‘Turkish’ in The Sufis, Kindle version, at once yields Shah’s explanatory statement: “…Nasrudin enables the Sufi Seeker to understand that the formal ideas current about time and space are not necessarily those which obtain in the wider field of true reality….The Sufi time conception is an interrelation — a continuum….” Shah has left a lot of material, a ‘large body of work’. Some of it, including the Pleasantries, seems self-evident, some opaque. Both are a problem. Electronic searching is a bonus. In this sense, perhaps, it follows the example of Nasrudin in emphasising the interrelationship not of time, but of ideas. At the very least it more swiftly confirms your ignorance. Whatever the form of publication The Pleasantries is exceptional. It was first published in 1968. With Nasrudin, as the story says, there’s probably a different time scale.

All of Idries Shah's books are worth reading as he is a great storyteller with a wealth of teaching-stories from the middle east . His books are thoughtful, well-written, and entertaining. The Mulla is my favorite of all---i always come away with a smile, a laugh, and a thoughtful nod. Here's an example: The mulla has been invited to a banquet given by the King. He goes wearing a fancy coloured robe. He sits down and immediately begins rubbing food into the robe. The king asks him why he is doing this. He replies "The robe got me in here, so it is only right that It should have a share!" If The Mulla was in charge of the Middle East there would be Peace.

I just read this book in small chunks while riding the bus to work - a great way to get the mind moving in the morning, maybe for reasons similar to the attraction of doing crossword puzzles at the breakfast table. Some of these short tales were immediately hilarious, but a fair number seemed strangely bland and pointless. In almost all cases where I drew a blank, a day or two later, on re-reading them I got the point - or at least "a point" - usually a genuinely insightful one well worth coming back for. Maybe two or three will have to wait for another time. This little book is some of the most satisfying personal reading I've done in recent memory. I dearly wish, however, that the publisher had figured out a way to reproduce the drawings with better resolution. They're wonderfully whimsical and surprising.

I was very excited to see this book. My last and first grayscale book was a huge disappointment due to paper and ink quality. There was only one four or so word review on this book but it really intrigued me. The book has about 50 (I'm guessing) or so beautiful pages of different doorways in grayscale. When I tried to color a page with a blue prismacolor pencil in was very heart broken to see the shorty results. While this book would make an excellent coffee table book it does not make such a great coloring book for several reasons. All of the doors and doorways are of wood and stone and other than one or two occasional colors everything needing to be colored is brown and gray. This being a grayscale book leaves it to be half colored then. On another note you can't use prismacolor pencils on this book because of the rough and bumpy texture. If you do decide to use prismacolor use a dark color because you'll need to use a blender pencil after that color and the ink darkens and rubs and smears into your color. I have left pics below. The picture with the blue door is one side prismacolor and the other side is prismacolor and the blender pencil. I did try one other picture with a prismacolor and that would be the red one and yes I had to use the blender there also. All of the rest of the colored pictures shown are done with several different brands of oil based pencils with much harder leads and slightly increased hand pressure. The rest are uncolored for you to see some of the inside book pages. You can try and use your imagination as to what color you would color those pages. They really should have just marketed this one as a coffee table book. The photos in it are beautiful and isn't an overly "been done" subject.

I really like doorways, so this works for me. Weel done.

I recently started a podcast, The Susanna Hutcheson Power Marketing Show. Since I'm starting to write scripts and produce podcasts for other businesses, I felt I needed this information.I had read quite a bit and done my background before starting my own podcast. I had one or two episodes under my belt when I began reading this book. While I had already done about half of what the book proposed, it offered up some brilliant ideas and I was most pleased. I'm sure it will be profitable to me going forward.The book is well written and covers just about everything. I would have given it 5 stars except that a couple of the links are dead. One I especially wanted, a Word doc, was a 404. The book is not old enough to be that out-dated.I recommend this book as a must-read to any person who wants to grow their business and do things the right way. I would also recommend thePodcasting For Dummies and Podcast Solutions if you want core books and are just starting with the plan of a business podcast show. The one thing they left out mentioning is WaveLab Essential 6 with build in Podcasting for about $99.00 on Amazon. I use it for all my audio production including my podcast and love it!

They made it easy to get an overview of the book before I read it page to page. My favorite chapter was the seventh. It went into "Podcast Production." It got into sufficient detail and specifics that I pretty much saw what was involved in creating audio and/or video files. Emphasis was more on audio files.The bottom line is that businesses should understand the power of podcasting and how to use it in their marketing mix. Podcasting can significantly improve a company's communications efforts with its customers, prospects, and the media. 5 stars!

This book stands head and shoulders above all other podcasting books for teaching you how to make podcasting a go within the enterprise. I haven't read another book that addresses so many of the concerns that businesses have when they want to start podcasting. The other two that I have read focus on the independent podcaster and the issues that they encounter with a small focus on business interests.What makes this book stand out so much for me is that it is written at a technical level that anyone can understand regardless of their role within a business. Every idiosyncratic element of taking a podcast from the planning stages production, copyright, distribution with rss, ROI and podcasting's role in integrated marketing is addressed in full.Businesses and "internal champions", as they are called in the book, tasked with creating a new or social media presence through podcasting should pick up a copy. I ordered this (despite the not-so-great reviews) hoping I would find a gem during my upcoming trip with my Popup going from South FL, AL, MS, TN, and LA. NOT!! I first checked FL and there is one entry on the east coast. No camping.The 15 pages dedicated to "Eastern States" shows a conservation etc office in Milwaukee, Douglas Point, MD; a research office in Springfield, VA; Jupiter Inlet Natural Area, FL; Lake Vermilion Public Islands, MN; Meadowood, suburban VA; and....that's it!!!Lots of places in AK, NV, CA, NM, AZ, OR, Wa, and ID. Would appeal mostly to people who like rustic, off grid locales and activities, preferably not alone (for safety reasons). They do indicate whether there are camping facilities (mostly primitive) on site or in the vicinity and where supplies (and closest First Aid help) are available. Good for site selection by group leaders such as the Sierra Club outings and other organizations who look for wilderness spots.Headings are Location; Description; Directions; Visitor Activities; Special Features; Permits, Fees, Limitations; Accessibility; Camping and Lodging; Food and Supplies; First Aid; Additional Information; and Contact Information.The Accessibility section refers mostly to wheelchairs. Covers restrooms, picnic areas, and some trails. I think this is valuable information for people with disabilities.For me it will be mostly educational - history and geography. The introduction helped understand how the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) was created and the types of properties (National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas, National Scenic and Historic Trails, and Wild and Scenic Rivers) it encompasses. The layout is attractive and there are lots of color photos with captions.The selection is based on favorites submitted by BLM personnel and only includes 20 states.

It is a nice book on blm public lands, with pictures and descriptions. However, the sites are those "recommended" for visitors and Not a complete list of all blm site locations that can be used. When I purchased the book, I simply wanted a complete listing of all blm locations, which I could then research further.

Love the information in it,, the info about BLM is great a lot I never knew. I do wish it had larger print. When you where glasses and your eyes aren't great tiny print is not helpful. Other than that I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to use public land discover the great places not necessarily advertised.

I was expecting an extensive listing of BLM recreational opportunities. I checked my state, Nevada, and found that none of the BLM properties that I frequent were even mentioned. Only a few BLM properties were listed for Nevada, none of which sounded appealing.

The book I purchased, while dated, was still useful. I would recommend a newer, fresher version or a different book

Book identifies where the parks are which is good. The map and directions are not so great. Wish it listed GPS coordinates to make it easier to find. COE parks are just terrific to stay in for camping.

Good reference.

The subject says it all. It is really disjointed and misses some significant features of the West Coast. Not too useful.

This is, without a doubt, the single best non-fiction chronicle demonstrating perseverance, courage and leadership of all time!The magnitude of adversity encountered by the crew is only captured in this illustrated version of the story. Most of photographer Hurley's glass plates had to be destroyed but those that remain are sufficient documentation of the incredible unwavering leadership of Shackleton which enabled crew members to endure overwhelming hardships and accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. All the important lessons in life are contained within its pages and that any of the participants, let alone all of them, survived is the miracle.I scour used book stores and eBay so I always have at least three copies on hand to give to various nursing home residents, VA hospital residents and teenagers so they get to experience both the true adventure as well as the leadership examples exhibited in the book. And the responses of the recipients keep me purchasing (usually for less than $7 each) more to distribute.An incredible true life tale with lessons for all of us.

This is an excellent photo and text over-view of the Endurance journey and the associated drama that followed its sinking. The photos are the key to this version of the story, giving something to the epic that words alone cannot give. I have long been fascinated by the Endurance expedition and this book is a "must have" to complete any collection of, or visit to, this story. The fusion of multiple versions of the story gathered from many different persons and the compilation of various types of data and historic sources also make this book a unique and special read. Though space and publishing would not allow inclusion of all available photos, one flaw might be that the author was not able to include more photos. I found this to be a great addtion to a Shackleton/Endurance collection.

This is a well written, easy to read, real life adventure story that took place just as the first world war was beginning. The hardships were imaginable. The crew of about 25 plus Shackleton, were basically marooned on pack ice and then a cold rock for about 20-months. It took a historic rescue attempt by Shackleton and two crew members to get help and save his crew, but the story is more than that. It's how The Boss (Shackleton) selected his crew and how he led them that is really eye opening.

The Endurance is simply excellently told, and with captivating photography. I was stunned the first time I read it ... and, it has been a re-read every year, twice a year (at least once per hot summer and every cold January) since that first page turner. What a company of men, led by a resolute and ultimately fair individual, can do is astonishing ... and inspires hope (and humility). You will wonder at the predicament and cringe at the odds ...and then marvel at what ... and how ... they overcome them. Then, suffer right along with those left on the island ...The book chronicles the 'refuse to quit on even one man' efforts of Shackleton, who struggled against unimaginable hardships in the most inhospitable place on earth, in an effort to deliver His men to safety ... from what must surely be an unavoidable fate.The journey will astound you ... enthrall you ... have you re-reading pages to try to appreciate the magnitude of the circumstance ... and then have you shaking your head in awe. These men WERE made of sterner stuff.Shackleton was not a perfect man, but ... a perfect hero for that very reason. Our world could use more like him.I encourage you to try this book ... it will change your outlook ... on many things.Q.

Shackleton was a great leader and deserved better than what he got from the world. I bought and read this book in a small paperback format. Had to get a larger format. Hurley's photos chronicling the ordeal are astonishing. Many had never been published. I bought this copy as a gift for an 8 year old boy, but decided to keep it for a few years. Some of the survival actions required are graphic. I felt too disturbing for young children. They are difficult for me to read. Caroline Alexander has done a fine job in association with the American Museum of Natural History. I intend to read more of her work.

The story is unreal and this treatment of the adventure is my favorite. Great pictures etc. if you love the Shackleton Expedition then I recommend this book highly! I read the entire thing in one sitting, read it thru the night like I was binge watching some Netflix! So I went home and bought my own copy.

A 'beyond Hollywood' story that many have never heard, much less seen in this manner makes it extraordinary!
