He describes being part of the "God Squad" in school and the struggles and heartache of being a slightly overweight kid with the name Butterworth. (And in case you're wondering, yes, he has already heard all the jokes.) His personal stories are delivered in a humorous, deprecating manner that is both engaging and relatable.He writes, "We were often referred to as the "God Squad" because we were all church kids. But it wasn't our deep love for the unlovely, our hours donated to charity, or our total abandonment to Jesus that set us apart. It was that we didn't cuss. We avoided every forbidden four-letter word by substituting words like frigging and schista and using phrases such as 'What the crap!' Also, if we ever said something negative about a person, we began by saying, 'Bless her heart,' and then followed it up with something like, 'but Janet is truly the most repulsive girl in the whole school.'"Barely crossing 100 pages, the actual allusions to the breakup of his family are late in coming. In many ways, this isn't really a book about divorce --- it's a book about growing up as a Christian kid in a secular world and having your world rocked by an all-too-common reality. The actual moment where Butterworth finds out the gruesome news that his parents are separating doesn't hit until page 57. That's when readers discover his response of shock and grief. For the last half of the book, we learn of his emotional shutdown and recovery. We also learn how the tender gift of his father --- an old guitar --- provided a much-needed path for healing. Throughout, Butterworth acknowledges God and communicates vulnerably without being preachy.Within the chapters, the author adds little pieces of trivia and humor. The book is packed with sidebars and inserts. There's a reference to a babysitter who wouldn't let the kids watch "The Smurfs" and a respelling of a "Pines" neighborhood sign to something far more amusing.There's also a lots of random trivia, like the "Special Secret Mario Message" that reads: "Defeat Koopaling at the end of an Airshop (Worlds 1-7) while wearing either the Frog, Tanooki, or Hammer Brothers suit and receive a special message from the King." While only Super Mario fans will truly appreciate this, it adds color to the text and is a welcome addition for short attention span readers.Throughout the book, Butterworth does a masterful job of keeping off-color humor and references to a G-rating. He hints and alludes without crossing any lines.Overall, SIX STRING ROCKETEER is a refreshing read for today's youth. I could hardly put the book down, and as soon as I did my teenage daughter picked it up and read it in two days! From the perspective of an adult who went through divorce at a young age, this book will help young people understand the complexities of divorce and help them cope.Whether you are a teen going through the upheaval of divorce in your own life, or you have friends whose parents are divorcing, this book is a must read. Since we all have been touched by the effects of divorce, that should put this book on the best sellers list in no time! Having known the Butterworth family many years ago, I found Jesse's insights and sense of humor very much like his father's. After reading it, I passed it along to my daughter-in-law (an adult child of divorce) and to a high school senior in our Christian school whose parents recently separated. Both found it to be very helpful with their individual struggles concerning their broken families. Great job, Jesse!

I loved it, this is a great book not only for youth but for parents to understand the dynamics of their children. I my suggestion don't hesitate. Snap this book up, it is a fantastic resource.

About the Author

A private person by nature, Mary Oliver has given very few interviews over the years. Instead, she prefers to let her work speak for itself. And speak it has, for the past five decades, to countless readers. The New York Times recently acknowledged Mary Oliver as “far and away, this country’s best-selling poet.” Born in a small town in Ohio, Oliver published her first book of poetry in 1963 at the age of 28; No Voyage and Other Poems, originally printed in the UK by Dent Press, was reissued in the United States in 1965 by Houghton Mifflin. Oliver has since published many works of poetry and prose. As a young woman, Oliver studied at Ohio State University and Vassar College, but took no degree. She lived for several years at the home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in upper New York state, companion to the poet’s sister Norma Millay. It was there, in the late ’50s, that she met photographer Molly Malone Cook. For more than forty years, Cook and Oliver made their home together, largely in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they lived until Cook’s death in 2005. Over the course of her long and illustrious career, Oliver has received numerous awards. Her fourth book, American Primitive, won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1984. She has also received the Shelley Memorial Award; a Guggenheim Fellowship; an American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Achievement Award; the Christopher Award and the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award for House of Light; the National Book Award for New and Selected Poems; a Lannan Foundation Literary Award; and the New England Booksellers Association Award for Literary Excellence. Oliver’s essays have appeared in Best American Essays 1996, 1998, 2001; the Anchor Essay Annual 1998, as well as Orion, Onearth and other periodicals. Oliver was editor of Best American Essays 2009. Oliver’s books on the craft of poetry, A Poetry Handbook and Rules for the Dance, are used widely in writing programs. She is an acclaimed reader and has read in practically every state as well as other countries. One of the most beautiful and touching love stories I have ever read. Mary Oliver writes of her and Molly Malone Cook's 40 year relationship shortly after Cook dies. The photographs are by photographer Cook and the text by poet and essayist Oliver. I have read it several times and will continue to read it.

Simple and eloquent eulogy. Mary Oliver does a superb job of portraying her relationship and life with Molly Cook. The photographs selected are wonderful and what a treat it would have been to meet either of these remarkable women. I love the simplicity of this little book, and the unreserved portrayal of them both.

This book is a rich blend of text by Mary Oliver and photos by Molly Malone Cook, her lifetime partner. The photographs let you take in the people and places of a time gone by, and the text, like all of Oliver's writing, is clear, clean, direct, and satisfying. She conveys all her love for the woman she calls "M.", and their life together in the place that was their home. So many scenes of their time with creative, ordinary and extraordinary people. This book is well worth spending time with, and if you love Mary Oliver's work, you'll want "Our World" in your library.

On a scale from 1-5, my 7-year old gives this “one hundred million gazillion.” Got it yesterday on pre-order, and my only “complaint” is that he didn’t want to go to bed because he wanted to keep reading, and he didn’t want to get dressed for school because he wanted to keep reading.

The "Dogman" comic books are supposedly written by Harold and George, who are themselves the main characters in Dave Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" series of graphic novels. So we already have a weird sort of meta issue going on before we even start reading.Here's the thing. I read and review lots of children's books, because I like and admire them, and I often find them better written and more interesting, (from a lot of perspectives), than adult literary works. (I'll take Daniel Pinkwater over Ian McEwan any day of the week.) But these Pilkey books resist being reviewed or described. They are antic and often very silly, even cartoonish. They also touch on deeper themes that are often overlooked in children's lit. Admirably, they are scalable, in the sense that there are jokes and delights for the youngest readers and yet also sly and deadpan humor for older readers. (A robot in this book has "Grape Nuts & Bolts" for breakfast. That's a sneaky funny throwaway for older readers, I would think. The subtitle for this book is a joke on "Lord of the Flies", which older readers will/might get and yet which won't derail younger readers.)But here's the main takeaway. Every one of my grandsons has a couple of "Underpants" books and some "Dogman" books. They pick them up at school book sales, the library, on bookstore trips, or they trade with friends. The books are on the family room floor, in the bathrooms, in their backpacks, on their desks, and on the floor of the van. This one I got for one grandson because it was the latest and he just couldn't wait for his turn at the library. Something is going on here.Bottom line? -- Since the books are funny, good humored, naughty in only the mildest of ways, and erratically independent, and since the kids love them wholeheartedly, I say "you bet!".

As a teacher I have yet to come around embracing Captain Underpants but Dog Man is actually quite funny. My 3rd grader adores the books and we ordered this one as soon as we knew it'd be out. He read it within one sitting and keeps re-reading it. When I asked him what he liked about the book her said, "The author introduces new characters and the book also has a dinosaur in it." He thinks it is funny and it makes my heart smile when I hear him chuckle and say "Mom, you have to listen to this!" and he actually reads it aloud to me. This is why teachers teach - to witness the light bulb moments and reading enthusiasm when children find books that capture them. Well, this Dog Man is definitely one that captures readers ;)

I was so glad I preordered this book. My son was very excited to get it and has already read it 5 times. He took it to school and said he had to bring it home because too many people were asking him to look at it, and he didn't want it to get ruined. LOL

My first grader was hesitant about reading chapter books. The Dog Man series has turned him into a lover of reading. Even after reading through the series, he continues to read some of a Dog Man book every night. The content is perfect for boys. Get your kiddo reading with these books and then into some complex text.

I like this book because it was funny! (Like all the other Dog Man books!!!!) There are 3 new villans, Piggy, Crunky and Bub. But will Petey decide to be good or not? And will Lil' Petey keep telling those awful jokes about poop?Read the book to find out!

It was short with not the best storyline. I wish it was longer. Probably not the best book to read

I’m not too keen on the graphic novel style books for my second grader, however he loves them! In spite of the few grammatical and spelling errors (on purpose), I enjoy reading these books with him. Even though they are comic style, they’re still over 100 pages each and he has every book from the series and has read them multiple times. Reading is reading, right?

I cannot say enough good things about this devotional. It has been profoundly life changing for me and opened my eyes in countless ways. The readings are deep, nuanced, and can be complex. I am doing this devotional this Lent with a group of women and we email each other daily our impressions on that day's readings. The group aspect has been really helpful as a way to understand some of the more difficult essays. If you are looking for something deep and challenging, this is the devotional for you. I'm buying the Advent version now and can't wait to do it this coming Christmas!!

I gave it 4 stars. Some of the readings are better than others. At least that's my opinion. This is a good devotional but I wouldn't say extremely inspiring. I like that it's written at a higher level. I find some devotionals are rather juvenile. I wonder if I read this over several times if I'll get more out of it. So often it depends on my mood if I'm as receptive.

It far exceeded my expectations for a devotional during Lent and Easter. Every devotion/meditation was written by a world renowned theologian. Finally a compilation of some really great thinking and true spirituality! Especially pleasing was the emphasis on divesting ourselves of the egoism and individualism that passes as religious thought these days. I have recommended this book to many people.

This collection is readings is crafted in such a way that it builds up in intensity as it follows in an indirect way the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ. The readings vary from prose--some fiction, some non-fiction musings--to poetry; and from devout Christians to agnostics alike--God uses all kinds of mouthpieces. It is a beautiful collection of writings. I would implore you to purchase it--it's well worth it's weight in gold-and read it as a nightly or daily devotional as you make your way toward the Lenten season. It will bring so many rich blessings to that most weighty and worthy time of year!

I really have enjoyed reading this book throughout Lent. It has several areas of topics by excellent authors - some I was familiar with and some who were new to me. I felt inspired by much of what was written. It helped to maintain my focus as Easter is approaching. Many of the readings would be great to visit any time of the year.

Loved this book! Each selection was perfect for Lent and through the Easter season. It does not present the traditional Lent and Easter readings but rather offers authors like Tolstoy who take the meaning of Easter further into the meaning of Christianity. I plan to refer to many of these essays again and again throughout the year.

For from the Spirit and for the Spirit. Wonderful book of readings that touch my soul and spirit. I am so appreciative of those who write such captivating, spiritual things. THese reading will be good year round for feeding my Soul.

As an evangelical Christian who has never participated in Lent but always found something lacking in the Easter celebration, I was looking for something more to prepare my heart in this season. I found it in this book. These writings are deep and life-changing as one reviewer put it, if your heart is searching and ready for that change.I will be giving it as gifts to friends and family.
