Very Informative book, that has help me understand many of the feature around the construction of small project such as a residential building to one as complex as a major highway. Save your more money and purchase the 3rd edition versus the 4th, the information is almost exactly the same and the price is much more reasonable.

Booked looked kinda used but wasnt expecting otherwise. The price was excellent, a lot cheaper than buying or renting from the college. The teacher said this book has a lot of good info for schedulers and project management so hopefully will get good use out of it.

Constructed Materials, Methods, etc. came within the projected time. It was in perfect condition as advertised. Excellent copy for new construction.

I purchased it as a required text book for a Construction management class. I feel like the illustrations help make the reading come to life. I wish that there were more online training tools to help like study guides and blogs to discuss the topics. Otherwise, the book is good and I will not trade it in, I plan to use it as a resource for my future career in interior and architectural planning.

Got this book for my granddaughter to learn about what's going on during the games she watches her daddy coach. Very good work done by author. I even learned a few new things too. My nephew has been obsessed with football from the moment he could grasp a pigskin in his little hands. This book is the perfect combination of picture book and football primer for a 5-year-old. It may also be instructive for people who've always missed several of the more basic aspects of the game. You will know what each player's role is in the game (beyond your basic wide receiver, quarterback, etc), and the key points will be clear. Ahm. Not that you don't already know those things (nudge nudge).

And so it begins, our son has been indoctrinated into the world of football. This book is very cute the images, but illustrations are good and my son loves it! This is a great book for any family that loves football and wants to share it with their kids

POINT OF VIEWMy standpoint as a reader of the book I would describe as 'experienced in algorithms', an expert in learning systems, but an amateur in music production - including computer-generated - and composition. My special interest in reading the book was the question of which methods are currently used to enable computer-generated music. Specifically I'm interested in how a computer program may be made able to 'learn' to play and and to compose music.A GREAT WEALTH OF MATERIALThe book 'Algorithmic Composition' provides undoubtedly a very broad introduction to the topic. The concepts of algorithm, markov model, generative grammar, transition networks, chaotic systems, Lindenmayer systems, genetic algorithms, cellular automata, artificial neural networks, and artificial intelligence are discussed conceptually, and examples are given for each chapter. At the end of each chapter you will find final assessment, where the strengths and weaknesses of the discussed algorithms for the purposes of the composition are pointed out.ALGORITHMS AND COMPOSITIONPerhaps it is no coincidence that the book does not begin with a detailed representation of the compositional process, but with a very extensive chapter (almost 60 pages) about the development of the human sign systems, the concept of algorithm, the development of machines for computation (computers), and the foundational issues of computability and decidability by a computer. What is missing is a similar introductory chapter about to the composition process. While the introduction about the concept of an algorithm provides a good framework for all the subsequent chapters, the concept of 'composition' remains a little 'in the air'. Even in the final discussion this gap is not really closed. Possibly does this lack express the limits of a representation of such a complex topic as 'algorithmic composition' , otherwise this can be seen as a challenge for a possible future revised edition, in which the concept of a - certainly idealized - compositional process will be elaborated to an extend which allows a better interaction with the different algorithmic methods.Within each chapter, as in the concluding discussion, the book repeatedly makes clear that between the great diversity and complexity of challenging pieces of music and the possibilities of algorithmic formalization has always been gaps, which will not be closed easily by a formalization. This is due not only to the limits of formalization - which has not yet been fully exploited - but also due to the conceptualization of the phenomenon of composition as such. We are always able to play or to compose music, but not so readily we are able to talk the same time about our doings in an 'appropriate conceptual' way (even 'great' composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven would not have been able to describe their process of composition in each case in a sufficient theoretical manner).ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?While the preceding chapters are quite clear about the different algorithmic methods, the chapter on 'Artificial Intelligence' is unsatisfying. Nierhaus himself points out at the beginning of the chapter that the very notion of 'intelligent' or 'intelligence' is used very inconsistently in the literature. This short chapter about AI is no remedy from this fuzziness of the field (one should notice that the algorithmic concepts of all preceding chapters are today in use within the context of so-called 'intelligent' systems or in the context of 'machine learning', the preceding chapters therefore deal already 'somehow' with 'artificial intelligence').EVALUATIONDespite the criticisms in detail, I would like to award the book five stars because it deals with a complex issue in a way that gives a good inroad for everybody who wants to understand the field a bit better. In particular I appreciate the thoroughness of the individual chapters combined with helpful further readings.

I cannot praise this book highly enough. It is open and clear, and really makes a significant crack into the world of algorithmic composition. In addition, each chapter is extensively and conscientiously followed by a list of source publications that promise endless hours of enlightening research. It is a significant and elegant contribution to the field of computer music.

I was going to buy this but luckily I found a copy in my uni library. This book has many errors and it only covers style imitation, not musical composition. I was amazed that the author even admits this in the book, and goes on to erroneously say that real algorithmic composition is not the subject of the book. I have just been looking around, and I found this review very helpful:The basics of the key tools of algorithmic composition are adequately covered in this book, and as such it does a mostly competent job of presenting them fairly clearly, but only in the realm of style imitation and despite many detailed errors. One of the things I found while reading the book was that I wished for an included disc, or even a Web site, with the musical examples available for playback so that I could quickly listen to them. I hope that the publisher and author consider this, as it would improve the book as a teaching resource. I also found the numerous errors misspellings, and typographical errors to be distracting, and potentially worrying.I approached this book with a large degree of enthusiasm and optimism, unfortunately I left it feeling disappointed.The emphasis on style imitation in the book and the lack of discussion of "genuine composition" is, I feel, a great shortcoming. There was an important opportunity here togo beyond style imitation--to me, as a composer, it is the least interesting or useful aspect of algorithmic composition--and delve into the more difficult realm of creative composition of compelling musical works. Furthermore, the book does not delve into algorithmic sound synthesis(surely still micro-composition), or examine in detail how some composers have used algorithmic principles to create great works, let alone attack the core issue itself. While the systems outlined in the book may be applied in a range of ways from the superficial and trivial to the very sophisticated, nowhere is the problem addressed of what musical composition really is. This has been a problem with some other books on algorithmic style imitation, but to my mind, musical composition is something other than the application of a set of rules (particularly music theory rules), and it goes beyond this. Style imitation already has a large body of literature; I feel this book does a competent job of pulling much of it together, but it has missed an opportunity to go further and add to the literature on algorithmic approaches to genuine composition.Maybe if I'm doing musicological research on specific styles, this book would be useful, but not for a composition student or working composer.

Useful summary

A small but good book with a general history of the Dragoons and a good description of their uniforms and weapons, which I found difficult to find from other sources. Very well illustrated well worth the price.

Dragoons were introduced into the US Army for the purpose of patrolling the overland routes to Oregon and later to California. They were the first mounted troops to be raised in many years.Their lineage can be traced to today's cavalry units.All of the work done by this author has proven to be well worth having, provided you have an interest. He has spent many years gathering and interpreting his information. One of his specialties is combing various works for narrative commentary. He is especially known for ferreting out contemporaneous images of the clothing and equipment in use.

I would recommend this little jewel to anyone, but especially to someone who has no previous knowledge on the subject. The Smithsonian photo of the folding forage cap is worth the price by itself. A great little concise overview. I only wish they had included a photo of Hall's Breechloading Carbine.

So many times boundaries were crossed from my inlaws and continue to but I have not known what to do in hope to prevent permanently damaging my relationship with them and theirs with their son (my husband) I bought this book! My inlaws marriage and the disfunction of their family is totally different then mine and there's a cultural difference as well not much but enough to see the difference... they have manipulated my husband and much criticized everything being my fault, we are treated like our family isn't worthy enough to invite over, they complain we live too far for them even see their own grandchildren 25-30min, sometimes my father in law has seen he children alone, my brother in laws look at me and my husband uncomfortably and it's just plain weird and disrespectful, considering no one else treats us with such a negative snobby like attitude, really it's because my husbands step mother is overly critical even states she's happy she never had a girl thank god and causes arguments with my father in law if he doesn't side with her about her viewpoint of me and she cries on command which I don't so then I feel like I've suddenly lost the battle if I even try to defend myself! Every relationship and relationships/scenarios with our inlaws are all different, but this book sure brings some comfort in knowing that you can gain that part of your life back without losing your marriage even if your spouse just doesn't get it. My husband is a good man but he has many times tried to just get me to accept continuously be hurt emotionally from them that I can't even eat in peace when I'm around them bc I feel like I'm being watched like a hawk for any little thing. I'm not much of a book worm but I am finding this book has so much in common with my life that I can't wait to finish it I hope it helps me be able to defend myself as a mother without sacrificing my dignity and self respect, giving me good advise to have a backbone and finally draw some boundaries to stop the emotional damage it's doing to me and my marriage.

3 years into a marriage with a man I loved more than anything and I couldn't understand how his family was still such a point of contention. This book addresses the personality types of deceitful and manipulative people, so rather than you as a spouse pointing a finger, your spouse is able to read from a third party what personality traits are healthy and which are toxic. The title is a little harsh, but the lessons on how to address these characters in the family TOGETHER was by far the most important part. As the book says, in law problems are marriage problems. I so so so highly recommend this book if you feel like you can't win, like you hold your tongue around your spouse's family, or if you are so tired of your spouse not understanding how difficult the people in his/her family are to you. Read this book together!! It's a game changer.

Great book. I only wish I had read it 15 years ago as it seemed like the author was writing about my in laws and the absolutely devastating affect they had on our lives. Although, ironically, I'm not sure I would have appreciated it as much had we not so tragically suffered as a result of their toxicity. Family of origin issues can make a person, especially a child, vulnerable to the world's evil, regardless of their age, and "Toxic-In-Laws" are perhaps the single biggest cause of this vulnerability because they were "toxic parents" long before they became toxic-in-laws. If you even suspect this to be the case in your marriage use this book as guide to fix it immediately because, trust me, left challenged, they can have devastating consequences.

Excellent and helpful book. I'm a grandmother so I bought it to avoid being the toxic in-law. Good advice on dealing with difficult family members without starting a World War. Also good way to analyze your own response and whether it is helping or hurtung.Has the added benefit of being short and to the point.

Susan Forward's books are always well written and this one is no exception. You'll recognize some of your in-laws if there's dysfunction in the family you married into and be offered ways to disengage effectively so their impact on your life is minimized.

This book has been helping my marriage it's absolutely a lifesaver. My husband now is starting to see how toxic his parents are thank God. It's a must buy .

Really good book. Will not help you fix your relationship but definitely explain and help you deal with the situation. It's more a "how to survive" than "how to fix" type of book.

Really great book. I bought this more for dealing with my sister in law, and its still applicable. I recommend this to anyone who has trouble understanding why their inlaws do what they do!
