I am NOT a farmer (yet) but I'm starting to try to pre-educate myself on a few things (mostly goats and chickens). I read this book on my Kindle Fire HD 7'' and don't have any blaringly obvious errors to report.I was comfortable with the information provided, while I may not know enough to say "hey, that's wrong", nothing seemed blatantly stupid, cruel, innacruate, or against common sense. It was nice that she provided what she thought was the best way (as in as humanely as possible when considerin the task at hand) way to kill and butcher most of the animals she covered in the book. She also gives her opinion as to when you just really don't want to tackle some task as a first-timer or without special equipmetn and help.In my position (knowing some basics about general animal care, and being better at cats and dogs, but hoping to like I said, one day have a couple chickens and goats for meat/milk/fiber/eggs as appropriate), I found the information useful as a grounding in several ways:-it was enough information to get an idea of where I think I need to find more information-it was enough information to maybe really muddly my way through if I was the kind to try to just jump in and learn as I go from mistakes and triumphs (but in this case I'm definitely not doing that! mistakes in this case can cause avoidable harm to a living creature)/ For someone who is a bit more confident or might have more farm-knowledge in their social network, it would probably be enough to try the simpler animals such as chickens.-it was enough for me to decide I don't want to try certain animals, at first or maybe ever.I an an admitted nerd/book worm, so take it into consideration, but I found the book well laid-out, and quite readable. I enjoyed reaiding it.

Great informative book for anyone that wants info on more than a couple of animals featured.

This is a dense, detailed, intense examination of the Reformation. I had to read it several semesters ago for a class and it still sticks in my mind as a prime example of why historians should not write history books. They know so much about the topic at hand that they suffer from being unable to distill it all for a general audience, and get bogged down in asides and pieces of stories only to pick up those threads so much farther down the road that the reader has long forgotten where that particular thread first got pulled.There IS some fascinating stuff in here, but this is not for the weak-hearted or casual, uncommitted reader. Pull up a chair, cancel all other social obligations, and expect to stay for at least several weeks. As a reference text, it is invaluable - there is gold in "them thare pages," and plenty of detail to understand how the Reformation began, proceeded, and influenced. But this is an academic work, not something that would appeal to a more general audience (which is why it is 4 star instead of 5).

Lots of detail about one of the most important periods in European history. It really opened my eyes to a large part of American culture that resulted from the particular brands of Protestantism that made it over here (though the treatment of early American protestantism is not really covered except in a quick overview). For example -- what are the different roots of the White and Black southern protestantisms? Why did those rather extreme Scottish (+ Scots-Irish) Presbyterians have such an influence over the US? He devotes equal weight to the Counter-Reformation -- so any of you who are Catholic or were raised in that religion would benefit from understanding the roots of "modern" Catholicism. Confessionals? Catechism? All counter-reformational. That said, I do wish he had an editor. Some parts just go into too much detail, and he lose the narrative thread. Someone else remarked that this is about the trees not the forest, and that is only partly true. The overarching themes of Reformation as Humanism, of the meaning of the Eucharist, of challenges and rebuffs to Papal authority do create a certain unity. But as you are diverted through the Transylvanian reformation, and the Polish-Lithuanian reformation, etc. --- while interesting in their own right -- it is easy to lose track of the the larger picture. I do wish the 30 years war had been covered in more detail, but that may be asking too much from an already 700 pp. tome.

I've just finished reading this and I already know that I'll be returning to it for reference and probably rereading sections as well. There is just so much history wrapped up in this single volume that it would be impossible to remember or understand all of it in one read.MacCullouch does a fine job of balancing the views and actions of Catholics and all the versions of Protestants that arose from the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. The core of the argument between these two varieties of Christianity is whether the Bible should be the go-to guide (Protestant) or whether the Church's teachings are of primary importance (Catholic). Of course, like all human endeavors, religion, politics, economics, art, and personality cults all play their role in history.This is an area of history that I've generally avoided, as my area of interest is nineteenth-century England and technology. But when I realized that I wasn't understanding some social issues because their roots lie in the Reformation, I signed up for a graduate-level Renaissance and Reformation class. MacCullouch's book is one of several on the reading list, but the only one aimed at the Reformation.At first glance, this 708-page text (plus notes, bibliography, and index) looks overwhelming, especially if you have to read it in a short amount of time, such as in a class. But I found the professor's writing style to be very clear and it wasn't a chore to read the book. I had so many "aha!" moments when reading this book I can't begin to list them here.Some other reviewers have complained that this single book cannot span the historical and intellectual range of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and they're right. No single book or author could accomplish that. But what MacCullouch has done is to write a very readable single volume that introduces many of the themes of that history. He does not focus on a single individual, although some, such as Luther, were certainly very important in the history of the Reformation and are mentioned much more than once. That is to be expected, but it doesn't detract from the quality of the material, and it doesn't mean that MacCullouch never writes about anyone else. He does.What perhaps was most helpful to me was the last chapter, which summed up some of the current-day arguments over religious beliefs, both in America and Europe, and pointed out how they are just ongoing examples of what amounts to a continuation of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. If you have any curiosity about this era or want to understand the breach between Catholicism and Protestantism, this book is an excellent first choice. Just be forewarned that, while this book is not exceedingly difficult, neither is it a "dummies" book, and you should come to it knowing a little history in order to get the most out of it. Don't be put off by the sheer size of the book.

This book is scholarly, witty, and fascinating. MacCulloch has taken a subject full of controversy and oversize individuals and made the book a page turner. There are no heroes in this book, only blood, guts, executions, trials, and internicene hatreds.The horrors of the Inquisition are shown not to be the sole purview of the Catholics--after all, Calvin burned Servetus at the stake for disagreeing with him about the Trinity, and he beheaded a few others for various reasons. The author's sense of humor is always present--he tells us that the reformers liked to sport long beards so that they would resemble Old Testament patriarchs, and then he introduces two pictures of reformers with cascading, curly beards covering their chests. He teases the reader with the puzzle of who wrote the Reformation hymn "Faith of our Fathers" and the answer will astonish you. MacCulloch was a high Anglican, but he deals with the controversies of the Reformation in an even-handed manner. At the end he reminds us that the Reformation stretched from 1517 to 1700, and Europeans were at peace for only thirty of those years. At the end, the borders had moved, but Catholics were still Catholics and Protestants were still Protestant, although very heterogeneous. This book is that rare thing--an exciting history book.

I just finished For the Beauty of the Church. Dang it, it is going to be an expensive book. I have already ordered two more copies.As a woman, a working artist and a believer my relationship with the church has been a love/hate relationship. So often I have been unable to articulate the struggle. David Taylor has brought together a varied group to give voice to the struggle. Not just a group talking theory, but individuals in the trenches. I was registered to attend the conference in Austin where these ideas were first presented, but I was unable to attend (a new baby and allergy season in Texas took me out!) I am thrilled to have this resource in my hot little hand. I read. I cried. I underlined vigorously. I wrote comments in the margins. I read more. I ordered another two books and when my budget recovers I will order more. (Merry Christmas friends and family.)For the first reading Barbara Nicolosi's chapter was my favorite as it brought healing to my heart. As the seasons change other chapters will rise to the forefront. I know that I will go back to this book to remind myself that the battle is worth fighting, and that the struggle, as Jeremy Begbie so eloquently reminds us, has an end and that it might behoove us to think from the end to the present. I am so PROUD of Eugene Peterson for not only admitting he has artist friends, but that artist friends are worth having, YOU GO EUGENE! Barbara Nicolosi's chapter reminded me that what is do is not a waste of time, energy or emotion. Joshua Banner's description of a pastor involved in one's arts career, in a positive way, blew my mind. I can not even imagine, but wow, what a concept. Hope stirred. And David Taylor did a delightful wrap up. Context, context, context! David is a master encourager.It is a good book. It was an easy read. "For the Beauty of the Church" will bring understanding into the Body of Christ.I have art in 54 nations yet at any moment I question whether or not I am "really" an artist. There is so much pain in the world, at any moment I can question the value of arts. It is difficult, at least for me, to balance the truth of it all, that what I do is worth doing. In the church environment where results and numbers are held in such esteem, it is hard to quantify beauty. I am very thankful for this collection of essays and their pointing to a truth beyond statistics.I am gonna go paint now.

This was recommended to me by an artist friend after several conversations on the topic. A helpful little book for those who might be unfamiliar with the conversation but are concerned with learning. Unfortunately, the book's greatest strength is also its weakness. I appreciated the variety of perspectives from across the spectrum evangelicalism and valued the inclusion of a Roman Catholic voice. However, this causes the quality of the chapters to be a bit uneven, some are more engaging than others. With that being said, all of them are worthy of your time and consideration. Especially if you're looking to understand the basics of the intersection between the life of the church and the work of the artist

This is the kind of book I will be thinking about, talking about, recommending, giving to friends, and re-reading regularly for many, many years. The essays collected and edited in this volume each stand alone as relevant, helpful, well-crafted works around the topic of art and the church. Taken together, they form both a manifesto on the beautiful kinship between the arts and the church, and a manual for how to best foster that kinship. One of my favorite things about the book was the rich diversity in the ideas presented. Taylor has gathered a blend of voices, each speaking thoughtfully from their varied perspectives on topics for which they are perfectly suited. And yet, even though the authors are diverse in age, experience, and background, the book maintains a sense of continuity and flow throughout its entirety.I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to a few specific folks:-all those in pastoral or worship ministry-artists of all kinds-believers who feel no connection to the arts, and wonder why churches should bother with them at allWhether you are a pastor, an artist, or someone who has serious doubts about the connection between church and art, this book is an absolute must-read.

Some thot provoking essays, very good read on Christian faith and the arts. Especially liked the final essay from Begbie. Might want to consider getting Begbie’s book or Crouch’s book instead of this collection, but this is a good intro, nonetheless.

As a worship/creative arts director for a church, I greatly appreciated this book.The chapters are all written by different authors with different perspectives on the arts. I found all of them to be helpful in painting a picture of the need, call, theory, and implementation of arts in the local church.It's an easy but satisfying read, I'll be using this with my arts teams!

I bought this book as a present for a friend. It arrived with a dirty cover and a large mark from a black marker running down across the entire side of the book. Not really a presentable gift. It would have been better to not sell it as new when it doesn't look or feel new.

This book came on time. I have practice the exercises and I am very happy with this book. My friends have used too and they seemto like a lot too. I definitely recommend to other people.

I absolutely love this book. Found it at the library and then had to have my own copy. The illustrations take you through every pose step by step, with options for adaptations. My clients love that they can have pre-set 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 minute routines - no thinking or planning needed, which helps us all to keep doing it. I love being able to incorporate pilates moves into my yoga, without having to wade through a lot of preliminary info. And this book has plenty of philosophy and background, so you understand why you are doing what you are doing. I am using this consistently 3 times a week, and in my case, I like to pick my own rather than follow the preset routines, so both paths are available.

Very detailed and clear to follow instructions and photos. Highly recommend it!

Ungaro's first in-depth book, "Body In Motion," presents a clearer description of many exercises (Corkscrew, for example, which, in Practice Companion, is depicted so unclearly it would be difficult to learn it) and, in my view, a sequence or rather series of sequences that hew closer to the sequence Joe Pilates devised and which you can find in his books, and in Brooke Siler's excellent first book on Pilates. The new book is not bad, it just doesn't seem to add much that was needed. There is a section on diet, for example, which is fine, and it seems, like many excellent Dorling Kinderley titles, to describe a "Pilates lifestyle". Alycea is an excellent teacher. She certainly has every right to alter the exercises and the sequence from what Joe Pilates devised. But I wish she had shown the exercises as he intended them to be performed, with his original sequence so the reader can appreciate the variations. This book is a nice addition to your library if you are interested in Pilates, but it is not what I could call one of the essential books on the subject. If you are interested in Pilates, get Joe Pilates's books, get Siler's first book "The Pilates Body", get Ungaro's "Body In Motion" and, if you don't have access to a good teacher, get a good DVD so you can see the exercises being performed. Like all DK titles, this book is beautifully executed, with lots of photos and it's nicely bound on glossy paper. I just think she did it better the first time.

About the Author

Gaby Rodriguez made national headlines in 2011 when, as a seventeen-year-old high school senior from Toppenish, Washington, she revealed she had faked a pregnancy for a class project. Her experience inspired a Lifetime movie, also titled The Pregnancy Project. Her grades were in the top 5 percent of her graduating class, and she was a commencement speaker. She was also in the ASB Leadership group and president of the school’s chapter of M.E.Ch.A (Movimiento Estudiantil de Chicanos de Aztlan: Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan). She was raised by her single mom and has seven brothers and sisters. She is currently attending college. Jenna Glatzer wrote the text of Celine Dion, which is produced by becker&mayer. Jenna is the author of 11 books and countless articles in national, regional, and online publications. The writer recently worked extensively with Jamie Blyth of The Bachelorette on Blyth's autobiography. This seems like an ideal book to have students read in a debate class. There have been plenty of discussions regarding the ethics of what Gaby did, but I personally feel she made a great contribution to non-fiction teen literature. The harassment that her boyfriend (Jorge) had to endure really did highlight reasons why boys leave teen moms. If anything, this book shows that we as a society contribute greatly to the problems of pregnant teens. There is a place between celebrating teen moms (via shows like Teen Mom) and casting them out in the streets and treating them like garbage. We need to be more supportive of our girls and give them confidence they will need in order to be good mothers.One of the characters I was most conflicted about in this book was Gaby's sister, Jessica. At first, I really disliked her for what she put Gaby through when she was younger. But, during the project, Jessica was one of her few allies. I think that through the pregnancy, Jessica changed for the better. Instead of rubbing Gaby's face in her mistake, she showed support for Gaby that Jessica herself did not receive when she was pregnant.

As a high school counselor, I absolutely enjoyed this book. Teen pregnancy occurs every year in high school and this book appropriately address the importance of protection and abstinence, but also how to help lift up people when they are already in a situation they cannot change. Apart from the topic of teen pregnancy, the book addresses stereotypes and questions why we stereotype people, how we need to lift others up and be a part of the solution and not the problem. Very empowering and encouraging to see what our youth can accomplish.

Fun. quick read. interesting that it's based on high school, but adults can learn to: NOT TO JUDGE. Also, it taught me to think about the feelings of those teens who are pregnant.

The book is something a teenager could relate to. It brings back those harsh memories in high school where you didnt really fit in, or felt alone. The stereotypes, rumors, and hurtful words that are said in the hallways, classrooms, facebook and twitter really do get to you. Those words hurt. I will never understand why people speak so badly of people they don't know, or backstab their bestfriend of so many years. It takes a lot for me to sit still long enough to read a book for 20 minutes, but i did love this book, and managed to sit a couple hours. It's a story of this girls life, her background, her history. This girl, like everyone else, has a story to tell. Get to know the people around you before you talk a word about others, because people can suprise you. This book is a great way to understand someone who has so little, and breaks those stereotypes, racial comments, and the bad reputation a person can have in high school. <3

I was intrigued by the concept of this book and anxious to see if it would be appropriate for my high school library. I am happy to report that I found it well-written and thoughtful. Gaby is very believable in explaining how she came up with the idea for the pregnancy project, how it turned out to be more difficult and painful than she anticipated, and how she coped with the totally unexpected and overwhelming media reaction.

I absolutely loved this book. It gave me a whole new outlook on just about everything. I learned that judging a book by its cover, is never ok. And that you never know what someone's background is. I definitely recommend this book for everyone! Such a great story to be heard.

This is a really great and inspiring story. I read this for a school project and it's one of the few books for school that I read that's not horribly boring. There are parents and few friends saying this book isn't appropriate for my kids my age. I'm an incoming freshman. They are very wrong. Kids my age and probably younger need to be educated more on this subject. In the book she talks about how her mom got pregnant and dropped out at my age. Her mom's not the first person in the world to have to go through that. That fact alone is enough reason why younger kids need to read this book and know about this stuff. I recommend this book to everyone.

My daughter loves curious so I bought, but I don't really care for the grammar. The sentence structure is not on the level I would like my child reading. I wish they would raise the bar a little. However, the plot of the book lines up exactly with the show, even if the sentence structure is less. The book really focuses on the visual aids.

My daughter loves this series, I prefer the originals (where Curious George's curiosity gets him into trouble, not just random activities). The Spanish/English scripts were useful and accurate.

Cute book. I teach Spanish and wanted a bilingual book for my stint as a Mystery Reader in my son's 2nd grade class. There are more educational books out there but they were studying dinosaurs and they like George so this was a hit.

This is a cute story written in both English and Spanish. It actually is helping ME be more bilingual. Its pretty short though, think like first reader. The pages are really colorful and shiny, not very "paper" feeling. But we really like it.

This is one of the few Curious George books that show up on the kindle fire correctly, so for that alone this book is worth buying if you have a child who is in love with this monkey like mine.
