I couldn't wait to finish reading this book so I could post a review! How nutty is that? However I found this author's book a refreshing real world perspective into the current state of 3D printing and how it relates to your Joe average consumer/maker.As someone recently bitten by the bug of "3D Printing" I certainly appreciate all the hype regarding this technology and how it's changing the world. However unlike Chris Anderson's book, Makers: The New Industrial Revolution (which I also highly recommend) Melissa Darnell emphasizes how this technology can change YOUR life, today.Historically, passive income streams have seemed to belong more to movie stars and recording artist collecting residuals from their work. However technology and companies such as Shapeways have established mechanisms that allow anyone with a Maker bent to not only create, but seamlessly offer their creations for sale to the public with little to no risk.She provides practical hands-on advice on everything from 3D software tools (many free), establishing a niche (keep it narrow), internet marketing (surprisingly Facebook not recommended), print on demand services (Shapeways), and examples of others like herself that have excelled in this marketplace.All this with a writing style that feels more like sitting with a friend over coffee and sharing a conversation about your latest favorite passion.
I've been into 3D printing on and off, but it wasn't until I read this book - yes, for the absolute beginner - that I realized how much the field progressed. And what I took most from it is the mushrooming of 3D design apps where you can customize a certain type of object and the 3D model can be downloaded, printed, sold. I've lived and endured through the era of big, slow, expensive 3D design software and now I can design something on my phone and put it up for sale? Unbelievable!The second thing that I liked was the final section with designer interviews. It seems I'm not the only one switching fields all the time. It was interesting to see how other people got into 3D printing first as a hobby and later on, as the central part of their lives. And speaking of polymaths, I was amazed by the diverse experience of the author when I checked the list of her projects and written books at the end.
Good book. Goes through the basics of 3d printing, but is an unfair portrayal of the limited scope of 3d printing.
Great intro book with thorough information. Great value for the price. The author does a great job of articulating the knowledge in a simple, easy-to-understand way.
Ms Darnell writes in a conversational style that's easy to read and understand. Offers some original suggestions.

I chuckled at the intro, because the author mocks those books that claim to be the only 3d printing book you'll ever need. I had just finished reading one of those books with that promise, and learned nothing except useless (except for in trivia) knowledge about the history of 3d printing, the kind of printers that are out there, the kind of software...... I already know that stuff. THIS book however is really well researched, filled with tons of useful tools, free resources, places where you can upload your files to make money with, and tons of inspiration. The author is well versed with doing this stuff, not just reading it in other books (although, if you read the resources section of the book, you'll see that she did do plenty of research). I'm grateful that she took the time to find such a diverse selection of 3d-printing entrepreneurs.... because, yeah... some of the things I thought were cheesy, but then there's stuff that fit my style of doing things, and things just blew me away. The interviews she pulled from were not just what the people are doing, but how they got started, how they grew..... So, whether you're a newbie, or a veteran, this book will inspire you, and provide tons of useful information that you can implement today. I'll say this-- The author's push for passive income opportunities has definitely changed the way I think. I was planning on printing my art one piece at a time... packaging it... shipping it. I think I much prefer the author's approach of letting other companies handle the entire process of fulfilling the order- collecting the money, dealing with shipping, returns, and the (often arduous) process of 3d printing.
