Leadership in the Wesleyan SpiritThis book is informative and meets the needs of the class I'm taking at Claremont School of Theology.

Lovett Weems has written a helpful book for leaders who have become frustrated with the authoritarian models of some traditional religious/business writers and/orthose who have become frustrated with the mantra of "if we just go back to...then it will be all right." One might suspect the later from the title of this book, but that is far from his approach. Weems shows that leadership in the Wesleyan spirit is not rote aplication of Wesleys writings and work to conemporary situations. He posits a hermeneutic move whereby we apply the broad general principles of the Wesleyan movement in the context of contemporary society. Generally useful to students of both leadership and Wesley studies. Highly reccomend

Superbly written. As relevant today as when first published, or even when Wesley himself first writing. Weems has a broad knowledge of history, the contect of ministry in the local church, and contemporary culture, and offers this as a beautiful gift at the intersection of all three. Reads lightly, but every page contains a quote worth capturing.

I found Dr. Weems explanation of Wesleyan leadership incredibly on target for the needs this century is bringing us.I was inspired and given a huge helping of food for thought. Ideas that I have never encountered in any other leadership or Wesleyan books. Plus its a fantastic source of interesting and powerful stories and illustrations.Dr. Weems might be a leadership genius for our generation. One dissappointment I had was that he did get bogged down in an academic catch 22. But that was only once.I strongly recommend this book for all leaders, secular and nonprofit organizations.

An excellent read. Full of on time information on Biblical leadership.

I really enjoyed how this framed Paul's letters and missions in their historical context. Giving political, cultural, technical, and geographic details to the time, places, events, and people around at the time increases my appreciation and understanding of Paul's letters one hundred fold. To learn what places like Ephesus and Corinth were like, or what due process and punishment was like in the Roman world was eye opening. This book helped cast Paul's letters from "books of the Bible" into living historical documents. Bravo to the author.Sometimes it felt a like historical fiction, however, as details were described that could never really been. Known. But that was stated up front, and a discerning reader should enjoy the embellishment without feeling offended.

This telling of the apostle Paul's life really puts his writings, life and times into perspective. He becomes a flesh and blood person instead of just an historic Biblical writer. The author thoroughly researched the culture, politics and geographical terrain at the time of Paul's life, and tells his story in narrative form. Reading the epistles in the New Testament now I "see" Paul in a new light. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this because they had a Kindle special and I loved it. I've studied Acts and several of Paul's letters, but this narrative made him real to me. I never felt like it was fictionalized, which was important to me.

This book gave reality to Paul's writings. Combining the history of the era gave a great feeling of bringing Paul's words to life. His epistles are daily bread to the soul and I now am fed to the full reading the work of the Holy Spirit live in him and impressed in a new way.This is a "must read" for all people everywhere. Your life in Christ will be found, renewed, grown.

I want to make this 3.5. At times it was wonderful. You could see the sea and the storms that crashed the ship Paul was in. At other times I would be counting pages to see how much more I had to read. It has made me want to catalog the order of Paul's letters in the New Testament and read them in order in light of this book. It certainly makes each of these letters more relevant when you read them within the context of when and how they were written.

This was a fascinating read. I have always been inspired by Paul and what I read of him in Acts and his epistles but this book did a great job of filling in some of the gaps in his life. The author speculates at times but in my opinion he does not over do. One does not to agree with all the speculations made in this book to gain a lot of new insight into the life and ministry of the great apostle. I feel that after reading this book that I will have more insight when reading the New Testament.John Pollock was able to write a well done compelling biography on one of the most compelling, world changing individuals to ever live. I highly recommend it to any fan of biblical history, or any lover of Paul's writings.

When my best friend bought this for us during our first pregnancy, we read it cover to cover and are doing so again with our second. We recently bought a copy for our friends for their first time around. The information is very scientific and is a welcome change to the mainstream (and sometimes kitschy) week by week books/emails available elsewhere. This strikes me as the real deal on what is going on with the baby at each point in the pregnancy, designed for the thinking parent/grandparent/etc. The photos of microscopic level placenta, neurons, blood vessels, fetal blood platelets, and more are beautiful and helpful. The real explanations behind many pregnancy symptoms, tests, and developments throughout the 40 weeks are great, too.I haven't seen the documentary but I've seen the "In the Womb: Animals" documentary from National Geographic done by the same team which focuses on three different mammals--dog, elephant, and dolphin is also beautiful and useful in understanding pregnancy and birth.

This book describes in detail what is happening to the mother's body and inside the womb with the baby. Focusing on all medical aspects that aren't visible to the naked eye. It was very thorough- tons of microscopic pics(yeah-real pics) and pics of the baby in all stages. Talks some about twins and some things that can go wrong, but it explains why. Has discriptions and pictures almost week by week. Easy to read, even though they have proper names from medical terminology. The national geographic in the womb movie is awesome too. I bought this book through Amazon, after falling in love with the information it provided when I checked it out from the library. I bought it new, something I don't particularly like to do(buying used is better for the environment, and a budget) but I figure I will pass this down the family line, and I wanted one in perfect shape- which all amazon books are in (at least the ones that are ordered directly through amazon.)

This is a wonderful book explaining the growth and development of a baby. We used it for our teen grandsons as their Mom was expecting a baby. It stimulated good questions and good discussions.The photos are well-presented with descriptive explanations.Amazon responded to the order and delivery in a timely fashion.

This book is amazing. So detailed, and such beautiful photos and models. One of my favorite books in my whole library.

Good pictures, great explanations. We keep this one on the table in the waiting room at the birth center.

I really like this book with all the stages of fetal development. The only thing I didn't care for was that it shows and talks about how they made the fetal models. Other than that it is a great resources.

By far THE BEST book to learn the API Calls and get your feet wet with the win32 API. I found Pinvoke to be problematic for me so I stepped back to the older method of doing things. I came from a VB3, VB6 and a VB 2010 background and have started picking up where I left off from back when. So far I've been able to write a few header files in a short amount of time and incorporate them into programs which either need extended support (where .Net falls short) or where VB falls short. I highly recommend this book! Some things may have been depreciated from the Win32 API times however, still a great starting point to learn.

I have the Visual Basic 5.0 guide to Win32 by Daniel Appleman (which is incredible) and I was looking for a book to use as a general reference to WIN32 API calls as opposed to for VB, so I bought this book, and I think it is excellent!The first 3 chapters are: WINDOWS 95/NT programming, THE WIN32 API, and CREATING WINDOWS.That is pretty much 3 books in one right there!The chapters I think make this book so nice are the chapters on the Registry, File Decompression, Threads, Timers, System Information, a really good File IO chapter that discusses File locking, Creating Icons.The book is also hardback which I was surprised to see since the price was the same as the other books that aren't.I have some programming experience but I would consider myself intermediate and I think this book is perfect for me.I don't understand what the few people who wrote mediocre reviews were expecting, I would think that anyone who bought this book would know C or C++ already, and come on, reading this book won't teach you C++, but it will teach you to use API calls in your programs.I don't mean to sound so "gungho" about this book but I have over 30 books about programming and NT etc., but so far only 2 of them have actually been useful, this book and Daniel Appleman's book on VB and WIN32.I hate spending so much money on books I will never open again, so when a good one comes along I have to tell people about it.

Any serious programmer needs to have several win32 books in their collection.

If you want to get to the real meat of windows GUI programming or just want to learn windows functions, stuff like locking out the user or how to get the pc name, create files etc than this is a awesome book! i picked this up for $2 and im so glad i found it. This book may be old but its definitely not obsolete. The functions have remained the same over the years. However people rarely use win32 api any more due to its windows only architecture. However i highly recommend it if you know either c or c++.

I've been using this reference for years. Though I am not a programmer, per se, I do need to know what goes on under the hood. This book has been my resource on a great many occasions. In 30 chapters, author Simon covers the entire Win32 API with concise, reasonably comprehensive explanations of each function. Syntax for use is shown as well as flags, returns and other information necessary to understand the function. There are a lot of code examples, as well. A very readable, very usable reference on the Win32 API.Jerry

What else can be said about something that claims to be a superbible? It's name says it all: almost every API you could hope to want to see is in here, with hundreds of examples that are easily programmed by hand or cut-and-pasted with the source code on the CD. Basically you set up one program (given to you at the beginning of the book) and then all the examples follow programming a "case" statement for the TEST menu control that will execute. If you're looking for ODBC or DAO APIs, this book has none, nor any APIs that will help with Multimedia or Telephony. Even so, this is a fantastic reference to anyone still using APIs to do their programming (which, unlike MFC or COM or at least not until you have a lot of experience with it...and not using AppWizard, allows you to program exactly what you want, how you want it) this book will pay for itself the very first program you write using it. Highly recommended!

Overall, this book provides the reader with a good reference to the basic Win32 API's, and I use it frequently in my work. The sample code is good overall, although I have found a few examples that are in error. The biggest disapointment, however, is that the book completely omits a reference section for the Windows messages -- something that was included in the old Windows 3.1 API Bible and should have been in this one as well.

I originally bought this book (online mind you, having nothing but the title, page count and a few vauge reviews) with the intention of learning how to control windows with the SendMessage function, but was disappointed to find it full of mostly the drawing part of the WinAPI.But after sitting on the shelf for a few months, it's come back to teach me soooo much about the Win32 platform and C++ programming for it. I went from being an amature console C programmer to a hot GUI, interactive and not to mention much more efficient (with tips on threading and spawning from the book) Windows coder. I'd pay for it thrice if I had to. If you're tired of VB for your apps, this is the transition point for you into V/C++ and/or ASM Win32 coding. This book is Win32.

Found this book difficult to read and a bit deceiving in its contents. From the comments on the cover and the introduction, I was expecting at least in part a chronological history of the period. Although filled with facts, you never get a good sense of the big picture. For instance the first chapter is entitled "The Eighty Years War". But after reading it I hadn't learned what countries fought the war, where it was fought, or who won and who lost. I think the author presumed that this all was common knowledge and he didn't have to insult us with these basic facts. So if you want a general overview of this period of Dutch history go elsewhere. If you already have a grasp of the period, but just need more meat on the bones, this may be a suitable book.

Merely reading the first and last chapters gives me a bird’s eye view of the rise and decline of the Dutch empire. The first chapter discusses the background of the Dutch rise. The final one supports the contrast between the Golden century, namely the 17th century, and the periwig period, namely the 18th century. The Dutch decline was due to many factors. The international competition was the major culprit. Second, with few natural resources and limited domestic market, the Dutch decline seems natural. Third, the Dutch seemed to buck the trend in that the population did not grow much. The decline led to outward movements of talents and capital. Finally, the Dutch mentality fit commerce more than industry so that industrialization did not benefit the Dutch much. Two things impress me, although I am unsure if that is my own misreading and misunderstanding. First, similar factors made the Dutch successful and declining under different international circumstances. Second, the reasons for the success seem more inexplicable and serendipitous, while the causes for the decline seem predictable and inevitable. I am not an expert on the subject, so I cannot judge his academic contributions, but I admire his scholarship. A great writer, he writes in a clear and convincing way.

From this, Dutchmen started spreading their presence overseas: in Africa, Caribbean, Indic Ocean and Latin America. Boxer analyses the motivations and the causes for the Dutch success in this enterprise.

I fail to see the Dutch success as an Empire. Its trading company, the VOC, perished in a sea of corruption in 1800. Great Britain defeated the Dutch repeatedly in the XVII century. The Spaniards beat them when the Dutch tried to conquer thrice the Philippines. The VOC liabilities, particularly in the East Indies had to be taken over by the Republic. The Dutch colonies in Asia were a disaster, plagued by inefficiencies and atrocities ( the massacre at the Island of Banda, for instance, or the Javanese War). The Japanese conquered them and after the II WW, when the Dutch tried to recover them they miserably failed. And to cap it all, how many people speak Dutch nowadays?
