It is an excellent commentary on the interpretation and application of the holy book. The central theme is that the Quran has to be read, interpreted and understood not excludively in its historical context. It should also be understood to be conducive to the needs of modern society. Furthermore, no thinking person can deny that the Islamic scripture, considered by the Muslims as valid for all periods, must be interpreted and applied in accordance with the needs of the period in which we live. Otherwise it may not satisfy the claim of its universality for all times. Properly interpreted and understood it can be a guide for its followers within the framework of the changing times. Life is not a constant phenomenon and its needs, problems and solutions also require a dynamic perspective. Then the Quran can be a great force among Muslim societies to promote the wellbeing of people and human dignity without any distinction on the basis of religions. In that broader context, the philosophy and explanations in the book are valid even for the religions other than the three Abramic faiths.

In reading through the book the author gives a much needed historical narrative of the process of bridging the Quran to the non-Arabic speaking reader. The author also tries to present the Quran in a modern way through a contemporary reading.I think the reading although contemporary is not innovative and does not provide the reader with a complete system or way to read on his own. He still resorts to studying opinions of various scholars and choosing among them.To me, a native speaker of Arabic I didn't find it innovative and methodical enough. I would recommend the writings of Mohammad Shahrour although only one is available in English for free on the webShahrour.org

Ziauddin is always superb. Very well written.

Awesome thank you

This book is an introdution to the discourse urgently needed in all muslim communities. It discusses important issues in a very clear, concise, and contemporary manner. It has given me the desire to use common sense in my practice of Islam, and not the 'arabasized version' of Islam being followed by so many muslims. May we have more thinkers in the newer generations to rectify what the current misinterpretations of the Quran have led the muslims to, a 7th century ritualistic practice of this beautiful faith.

The book blurb adequately describes the contents so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. This book was recommended to me by a Muslim friend as a good introduction to understanding Islam and the Qur'an. I'm a Christian and have no desire to convert. But I am interested in learning more about what Muslims believe.I was surprised to learn how many familiar names from both the Old and New Testaments are mentioned in the Qur'an. A few of those names are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ezekiel, David, Moses, Daniel, and John. Per Mr. Sardar, Jesus is mentioned in 93 verses. The Qur'an text indicates that Jesus is not The Son of God. But does indicate, and Muslims believe, He was a prophet and did perform miracles. I was also surprised to learn that in the Qur'an both the Torah and the Bible are considered as revealed texts from God.You hear many conflicting things about Islam in the media and much of it involves the extremists on both ends of the spectrum. Is what we hear based on the actual text of the Qur'an or is it based on misinterpretation and customs that have become "standard practice" but are not necessarily what the Qur'an text actually says/means? I was taught to use multiple sources and do my own research which is why I read this book. Mr. Sardar presents an interesting perspective and overview of The Qur'an and how it should be interpreted. This book is a good starting point for those like me who know very little about Islam and what Muslims are taught to believe.

This is an excellent analysis of the Qur'an. It's thoughtful, well researched and cogent. I can't imagine it's the sort of thing that will go down well with the lunatics in the Muslim world who are all too keen on extremist positions and their corresponding brothers in the non-Muslim world whose xenophobia and Islamophobia is matched only by their ignorance. Anybody who is interested in Islam should pick this book up

I so looked forward to this novel that I preordered it so it would arrive on its release date. The premise seemed so fascinating (an Aryan mother bravely choosing to follow her family to a Nazi camp) that I could hardly wait to begin.I knew from the outset that it wouldn't be a light read (given the topic) that probably wouldn't end well. Helene Hannemann was a courageous woman who refused to abandon her family when they were taken to Auschwitz. While inside, she fought to improve their lives and the lives of other children. I enjoyed reading about her relationship with her sweet children and her recollections of the life she and her husband shared. That brief bit of joy was engulfed by a heartbreaking and touching story that put a lump in my throat at times. I also enjoyed reading about the friendships Helene made while imprisoned in Auschwitz. My problem with the book (thus, my three-star rating) was that Helene's actions just didn't seem realistic for one imprisoned in a Nazi death camp.SPOILER: In her interactions with Josef Mengele, she constantly questioned and challenged him. She wasn't rude yet she was very firm. In one situation, he asked her to do something and she replied that she'd give him her answer the next day. Having read many other books on WWII (both fiction and nonfiction), I've never heard of any prisoner behaving this way and frankly, I didn't buy it. I kept thinking, "This couldn't have happened. She would have been killed for much less." END SPOILER.Having said that, I am glad I learned a bit about how the Romani people lived under Nazi rule and am inspired to read more of their stories.

Auschwitz Lullaby is based on the true story of Helene Hannemann, a German woman married to a Gypsy man who had five kids. All were taken to Auschwitz. Though she had the opportunity, because of her pure German heritage, to stay behind, she chose to go with her family to the concentration camp. There was no way they were going anywhere without her. Because she was a nurse, Helene began working at the camp's hospital and was eventually assigned, by Dr. Mengele, as the director of a nursery school in the Gypsy camp. This was a truly compelling, heartbreaking, powerful read. I've read many WWII books, but never one that delved into the plight of the Gypsies during that time. It was informative and impossible to put down. I read the majority of it in one day.I can't sugarcoat things. It wasn't an easy read, but it's one that everyone should read. We can never forget the atrocities that took place. We must always remember. Mrs. Hannemann's story was one that needed to be told and I'm so glad this author did it. This is a story that I'll be thinking about for a very long time and one that I'll be recommending to everyone.

This story is much like other holocaust storys in that I’ve frequently read of all the atrocities at Auschwitz. I did not know about the Gypsy camp and school however, and am always appreciative of a novel that teaches. Harder to put down than I anticipated.

My review for:Auschwitz Lullaby by Mario EscobarThis is one of those books that scares you on pretty much every page, yet you can't put the book down either.A German woman named Helene got up to start her day ...and then the SS shows up. I was surprised they didn't shove her into her home and force her to stay as her family was hauled away ... guess she scared the SS guys more than they'd ever let on!With 5 kids in tow and her hubby, they wind up on one of the blasted trains that ran to Auschwitz.I've learned a lot of crazy things about the place before I read this book .. but did you know that there really was anursery/pre-school for children for a year in Birkenhau (which was the "women and children" section of Auschwitz)?*Warning: unlike The Butterfly & The Violin by Kristy Cambron, this book doesn't have any "breaks" in it and has a very depressing ending.A powerful story that will be hard to forget.

The book was well written and factually accurate. The characters were well developed and interesting. The story line was based on a true story of a women, like most devoted parents was prepared to give her life to make her children's lives better. Excellent book. I could not out it down.

Fair book, not great.

I could not put this book down. Wonderful. Well written. It is amazing what the human spirit can withstand.

This book was so sad but uplifting at the same time if that makes sense. I highly recommend it!

A common saying in philosophy is that you can read a book and enjoy it very much, even if you agree with not a word of it. In the case of Edward Feser’s The Last Superstition: A Refutation of the New Atheism, that is not entirely the case; I enjoyed all of the book, but I strongly disagreed with the last quarter of the book. Allow me to review the books contents, before pointing out my disagreements. I should also say to those of you who are not initiated in philosophy, this book can serve as a good introduction, as Feser has a remarkable talent for being able to bring even the most difficult of concepts down to a level that the layperson can understand. Further, Feser is a very funny guy, and I found myself having to put down the book as I was literally laughing out loud.Feser’s book, as the title indicates, takes aim at the so called New Atheist movement, which began with Sam Harris’ book The End of Faith and culminated with Richard Dawkins’ book The God Delusion. A central theme of the literature of the New Atheists is that religious people are blinded by faith (which they define as the will to believe something when there is no evidence to believe something), and religion needs to be eliminated in order for society to flourish. Feser’s argument is that the so-called war between science and religion is a myth, and that in truth the war is between two rival philosophical systems: classical teleological philosophy (the philosophy of thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Aquinas) and mechanical philosophy (what we would today call naturalism and materialism). Feser argues that the latter is demonstrably false, and that the rational thing to do is to return to classical philosophy.Chapter one of the book sets up the basics tenets that Feser will defend. Chapter two consists of a retelling of the early history of western philosophy, beginning with Thales and giving particular emphasis to the metaphysical ideas of Plato and Aristotle, showing a particular deference to the latter. Chapter 3 is arguably the best chapter of the book, because this is where Feser shows that the New Atheists (Dawkins in particular) do not understand what they are talking about when it comes to the classical arguments for God’s existence, because they do not know the difference between metaphysics and empirical science. Feser does an excellent job in explaining very abstract arguments in this chapter and makes a powerful case for them that even a naturalist like myself cannot fail to be compelled by, even if I find them faulty in the end. At any rate, Feser shows that the arguments are worth taking seriously and that many people do not understand what the arguments are really trying to say. Chapter four continues with the Aristotelian trajectory, stating that if you accept the Aristotelian/Thomistic conception of reality then you also have to accept the natural law theory of morality. I found this part questionable, since Aristotle was not a natural law theorist, but Feser makes a good case for the theory, if one already accepts the metaphysics that he sets out. I definitely agree with him that our metaphysics precedes our ethics. As I mentioned in the opening paragraph, where I began to disagree with Feser was in the last quarter of his book, chapters five and six. Chapter five talks about how (according to Feser) modern philosophers abandoned rather than refuted Aristotelianism, and embraced mechanical philosophy and materialism. This is a bit of an overstatement, because Aristotelianism was not abandoned by modern philosophers; only Aristotelian causation and classification of science was abandoned. Other aspects of his philosophy (such as virtue ethics) are still defended by materialist philosophers. Aristotle sought to know what things in themselves were; or as he formulated it, what there end goal or purpose was. Modern philosophers saw this as a waste of time, and modern science looks at causal relations between objects; its nature or essence is not needed. So, while certain elements of Aristotle were abandoned, it is false to say it was abandoned completely. A good way to think about this is by comparing Newtonian physics to quantum mechanics. You can still explain gravity and velocity through Newtonian means, but that is not the complete picture of things. Newton was superseded, but not abandoned. The same can be said of Aristotle.A considerable amount of the book is focused on eliminative materialism, which Feser defines as a brand of materialism that eliminates the mind. This is false; eliminative materialism states that folk psychology is false, not that there is no such thing as the mind. I was extremely disappointed with Feser’s caricatures of materialism, because they are similar to Dawkins’ caricatures of God. Perhaps Feser should take his own advice from time to time.Overall, I highly recommend this book. Whether you are a theist, an agnostic, an atheist, a naturalist, a skeptic, or anything in between, you will enjoy the book. You will not agree with everything (as is the case with any book), but you will be better off for reading it and maybe question whether your own beliefs are built on as strong a foundation as you might have thought. A compelling, thoughtful read overall. Thank you Dr. Feser.

I was not sure what to expect when ordering this. From the outset Feser is transparent about his Catholicism and his respect for Aquinas philosophy. I was concerned that this book was going to be a knee-jerk reaction to modern atheism which would not be helpful as I needed clear, rational arguments. My concern, however, was entirely misplaced. From the outset, Feser begins to make his case how the abandonment of Aristotelian philosophy makes modern philosophy, and science itself, incoherent. He argues that the ultimate logical, rational conclusion to (mechanistic naturalistic) materialism is eliminative materialism, which is completely vacant of any coherence whatsoever. He exposes the "gifted amateur" philosophies of popular writers, highlighting the need for greater rigor and study of philosophy in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting solid arguments for classical philosophy.

I chose this book when I was looking for a response to the "New Atheists" whose writings are so popular. I found it insightful, cleverly written, wonderfully abrasive toward the modern naturalists who take themselves so seriously, but a bit repetitive and a bit too long. Still, it was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the philosophy of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, and why their thinking is still important today. His basic point: abandoning Aristotle was the greatest mental mistake of modern history. The first chapter calls the naturalism of the New Atheists "bad religion," and shows how they condemn religious faith while operating out of their own unproven beliefs, which underlie an unexamined quasi-religious faith. Naturalists claim to base their claim on science, but Feser points out that they are really appealing to a philosophy that denies formal and final causality, and other basics of Aristotle and St. Thomas. The presuppositions of this naturalist philosophy, as he will say again and again, undermines the basis of real science. As someone who was educated a million years ago in Aristotle and St. Thomas, I found the second chapter very valuable. Feser offers a clear and very entertaining summary of Aristotelian and Scholastic philosophy, reminding me again about the meaning of realism, nominalism, and conceptualism and the way they appear today, Aristotle's metaphysics, including hylomorphism (the unity between matter and form), the meaning of potency and act, and the four causes, especially formal and final cause. Modern thinkers have mostly lost track of these things, but they provide a crucial tool in explaining reality, and their loss explains much of our purposeless confusing today. In the third chapter, Feser takes on Dennett and Dawkins and the other New Atheists by comparing their thinking to the thinking of the Medieval philosophers. The main topic is the existence of God. This includes a discussion about First Cause, Unmoved Mover, Pure Being, and Supreme Intelligence. The author rebuts conventional thinking about formal and final causality, helping us understand what the old philosophers really taught when they used those terms. The fourth chapter includes a discussion about the soul, Natural Law, and faith, reason, and evil. The discussion of the soul requires a good understanding of matter and form, and formal cause. I found the discussion about Natural Law unconvincing when he tried to apply it to marriage and birth control. At issue is formal cause and final cause. He laid great stress on the "form" of two sexual organs united together for the sole purpose of creating life, with a conclusion that the more children you have the better, thus fulfilling the final cause of the sexual act. I wondered why he focused on this smaller reality contained within the larger form of a marriage itself, with a larger final cause than the mere bearing of more and more children. The fifth and sixth chapters deal with the disaster created by naturalist thinkers, whose purpose from the beginning was the destruction of the Christian world-view. This meant they had to attack ideas like substance, essence, and formal and final causality. Along the way, I was reintroduced to a term philosophers also use without an explanation: intentionality, which is directed outward toward something else and is a crucial element of final cause. He contends that an atheistic interpretation of reality began with Galileo, then went on to Hobbes, Locke, Hume, and Kant, and he goes after their philosophical ideas with gusto. He demonstrates how their thinking actually destroys science, which assumes things like causality and intentionality, which is a subtle way of saying final cause. All in all, a good read. I would recommend it for bright students who have encountered the naturalism enshrined today in the universities, with their general disdain for religion.

If you've read "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins or similar books by Christopher Hitchens, Daniel Dennett, or any of the New Atheists, you owe it to yourself to read an intelligent rebuttal from a professional philosopher. Feser appeals not to emotional personal experiences or proof-texts from the Bible, but to reason and philosophy. He shows how belief in a First Cause is rational, and disbelief in one absurd.

My 26 year old grandson recently became interested in Vedanta / Hinduism, and at this stage he finds this version more comprehensible than others. I recommend this version especially for students of Comparative Religion, Psychology and Philosophy which is in English and Devanagari but does not have the English transliteration. The only comment I disagree on thus far is in Chapter 5 verses 1, 2, & 3 where this Swami says "He (Arjuna ) is being selfish, thinking only about himself and his position." In his Complete Works the invincible and incomparable Swami Vivekananda says differently. Essays On The Gita by Sri Auroqindo also disagrees with Swami Rama.

A timely and relevant translation of this classic, Swami Rama does an excellent job expressing Sanskrit in a modern context. The result is an easy to follow and highly relatable text. Enjoy!

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the greatest spritual texts in the world, one which for thousands of years has been used to illuminate the hearts and minds of seekers everywhere. In this outstanding translation and commentary, Swami Rama makes accessible to the modern western mind the fundamental truths of the original scripture by placing them into a psychological context. Whether familiar with Vedic philosophy or not, anyone can benefit from the clarity and insight provided by this book.

Swami Rama is one of the foremost writers on Yoga Philosophy. His commentary on the Gita has the same clarity and depth of his other books. In this life we are all Arjuna with our own duties and struggles to understand the relationship between our mind, our spirit and the life we are leading. Swami Rama helps us unravel those relationships with clear and frank explanations.

LOVE! This is by far the best explanation of the Bhagavad-Gita. Reading it has enriched my practice ten fold!

Wonderful information. Very well written and the explanations are clear and useful

Excellent

Making literature accessible and practical to modern people is always a challenge. The Perennial Psychology of the Bhagavad-Gita is a text all psychologists should read as it details many of life's challenges complete with explanations. This book was a required text for our class.

Despite the small size, this is an essential handbook into the thinking of a Witch Hunter for the warhammer roleplayer. It cleverly covers witch hunting tests and trials that ensuring that zealous witch hunting will never be far from paranoia. While not covering any particular warhammer rules this handbook will allow first and second edition witch hunters to carry on in their often over zealous hunt for Witches, Warlocks, Demons, Undead and anyone who may doubt the witch hunter's authority.

My only problem with this book was that it's bound in leather and I didn't know that before it turned up. I sent it back because of this - that is my only complaint (well that and that I can't now read a copy). It's a nice little background book - ideal for adding flavour to your campaign or character. A nice little bit of icing on your setting, it's not going change anything but it'll give you a greater understanding of the Empire. More useful for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay than anything else. My stars rating is based on the contents, rather than my complaint.

Mildly entertaining- journal style reading that won't change your gameplay. Might influence a gamemaster to throw one in a campaign as an NPC but nothing in here will be used as a resource during a game.

If you like the oldschool witch hunters on the warhammer universe this book is for you its like an actual ref guide on weapons short stories facts on how to spot and find diff sighs of chaos taint etc hope they continue this series

Excellent handbook for Witchunters

Etched in Stone is a refreshing look at how God's word stands the test of time. Lisette Bassett-Brody has just provided every Bible-believing Christian with a valuable witnessing tool that should be required reading for every churchgoer today. --Mike Huckabee, Former Governor of ArkansasSimple and straightforward Etched in Stone clearly illustrates how important artifacts discovered in the field illumine our understanding of the Scriptures. As a result, any reader will gain a renewed confidence in the Bible as true to the events it records and develop a deeper trust in the God who gave it. --Randall Price, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor of Biblical and Judaic Studies, Liberty UniversityLisette Bassett-Brody hits the mark perfectly as she demonstrates how the validity of the Bible has clearly been "etched in stone" since the beginning of creation. As a Christian, this book will strengthen your faith and give you the treasured knowledge needed to vigorously defend it. --Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel, American Center for Law and JusticeThis is a great little book for everyone. Skeptics will find out that the Bible can't be shrugged off so easily. Believers will rejoice as their faith is strengthened. It's simple, straightforward and fascinating. I haven't even finished this book, but love it. I love how it gives the biblical reference, the story behind it, and an independent review/verification. I just returned from Israel and would have loved to read this book before I went. Easy to read, and easy to put down and come back to later. This should be a book on everyone's bookshelf.

The author has gathered together short factual narratives about items in the Bible. The purpose is to prove that the Bible is factual. These short narratives are based upon a variety of archeological findings by many different people over many years.

I liked the short concise proof of the Bible in archaeology without going into a long drawn out paper.

Excellent photo images of the particular archeological findings. Pretty convincing evidences are given of the biblical places, persons, etc. that are referred to. Easy, non-boring reading.

I just received my copy today... It is even signed (if by the real person)... I am NOT a reader, but do enjoy learning something about something if I read something about it...The book is simply organized with a series of "articles" in three sections... "People", "Places" and "Things"... Each subject "article" is simply formatted in that the author gives a mini-refresher of who or what about the subject and then explains how the "finds" relate... Each subject has a photo of the "find", a brief history to (re)familiarize with the subject and a description of the find. ...Not 42 pages of boring detail on the same subject...just a few easy read pages for each subject... Easy to read, easy to enjoy and keeps my interest to keep reading...I am NOT a reader but just this afternoon, I have read and thoroughly enjoyed the first section on "People"... That is about a third of the 200 some odd pages. I will probably have the book read in the next few days, but a real reader could probably have it read in a couple sittings...

As advertised. I love seeing all the artifacts that have been excavated over the years that point directly to the Bible and document the history told.

Was interested in learning about these artifacts pertaining to Israel and the book was very informative and gave the right information about each item found in their Archeological discoveries. Would recommend to anyone interested in this type of book.

If anyone doubts the authenticity and historicity of the Bible, this book is for them. It validates that every story in the Bible is true and historically accurate.

I purchased this for a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land and started reading the sections we were scheduled to visit. When I read the author's opinion that the Holy Family stayed in Bethlehem with Joseph's parents, I raised my eyebrows, but when I next read that "Joseph was therefore a stonemason..." (page 35), I decided to trash the book. If the rest of the book portray's the author's opinion (based on his own private revelation, maybe?) as fact, it is, at best, misleading. Some people would say heresy. Don't waste your money on this if you are a bible-loving Christian.

This is a small book and easily fits in a purse. That does mean that the font is on the small side. It has photos and maps and gives concise history and background of all the sites so it is good to take along on your tour. It does NOT contain any info about hotels, restaurants, etc.

For people touring Israel, or just wanting information about various Biblical sites, this is a very helpful resource. Because it is designed to be carried in a pocket or a day-bag, the print is rather small. The information in this little jewel is very accurate and highly informative.

Seems very comprehensive and good. One quibble. I wish there was a larger map in the book to locate all the places mentioned.

Small and easy to carry, but full of information and details to make our tour more meaningful. Very well done!!! Really love this guide.

Nice size for travel and packed with great info for a first time traveler there.

wonderful book, I had the priviledge of going on a 2 week visit in Israel in Jan. with Dr Luker, the book is exactly what we saw and if I had read the book prior to the trip, I would have understood more of what I saw and experienced. What an awesome experience to read and to actually see the land where Jesus lived and taught. Makes the Bible so real, and made my faith and belief so much stronger.

Useful information but organized in a rather odd way for me.
