On the Arabic and Muslim side al-Ghazâlî's acceptance of demonstration (apodeixis) led to a much more refined and precise discourse on epistemology and a flowering of Aristotelian logics and metaphysics. With al-Ghazâlî begins the successful introduction of Aristotelianism or rather Avicennism into Muslim theology. After a period of appropriation of the Greek sciences in the translation movement from Greek into Arabic and the writings of the falâsifa up to Avicenna (Ibn Sînâ, c.980 1037), philosophy and the Greek sciences were naturalized into the discourse of kalâm and Muslim theology (Sabra 1987). There is a good reason Al-Ghazali is acknowledged as the first Muslim scholar who laid the foundation of rational thinking in the interpretation of Islamic beliefs and rituals. He is also regarded as one of the founders of Sufism. In this short translation, the topic of introspection to understand universal truths and the very meaning of human existence is masterfully covered. He uses analogies and allegories to explain complex thought processes that many of us use to intuitively understand what we can observe and feel but find it hard to articulate to others. It is amazing that a person who lived a thousand years ago can resonate with believers living today! However, his arguments are wasted if the reader is a die-hard atheist or a non-believer. Such a person would find many holes to poke in Al-Ghazali’s reasoning.

This short book forced me to reflect upon myself and eventually change my "business as usual" of life. Al-Ghazzali philosophically breaks down the human "self" and formulates an argument of why it makes sense to transcend the body and its five senses and make a connection with God Almighty.The book's content talks to you so directly and strikingly that it dumbfounds you to imagine someone wrote it a 1000 years ago.If you are a believer (no matter what religion), you will find this book no less than a hidden treasure. It will help make your connection to God stronger by answering many questions you may have. Even if you don't believe in God, it will still give you insight into your own self from angles that will keep you thinking for a while.I cannot recommend this book highly enough and wish there were more stars I could give it.

Preferred self-help works include Dante's "Divine Comedy" and Boethius' "Consolation of Philosophy". But occasionally, nudged by the missus, I'll open up one of the works on her growing list of recommendations and start reading.So it happened that I bumped into "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us" by Daniel Pink. In this book the author argues that how the vast majority of companies are motivating their workers "extrinsically" is completely outdated in our modern economy: "They continue to pursue practices such as short-term incentive plans and pay-for-performance schemes in the face of mounting evidence that such measures usually don’t work and often do harm." These monetary rewards, Pink writes, "can deliver a short-term boost — just as a jolt of caffeine can keep you cranking for a few more hours. But the effect wears off — and, worse, can reduce a person's longer-term motivation to continue the project." In today's world, the author argues, folks are motivated intrinsically. You leave them to their own devices, don't burden them with sticks and carrots, and the creativity will start flowing like the Mississipi River.This book is certainly interesting. The author puts forth a straightforward argument and provides ample research to back up his thesis, some of it eye-opening. Who would guess that young children are more motivated to produce a drawing if they are not expecting a reward after the fact? In another example, "researchers at Cornell University studied 320 small businesses, half of which granted workers autonomy, the other half relying on top-down direction. The businesses that offered autonomy grew at four times the rate of the control-oriented firms and had one-third the turnover."It all sounds solid enough, though the question arises which companies are being investigated here. Are these Cornell researchers comparing start-ups run by fresh college grads in Silicon Valley to the McDonald's in Pleasant Hill, Iowa? Or are we talking about similar industries in order to level the playing field? As mentioned above, this reviewer owns a small business himself -- though not of the glamorous kind -- and gets the sense that Pink's head exists in a bubble of Facebook, Apple, Uber and other innovative tech giants. His examples of companies motivating their employees the 'correct' way -- Atlassian (software), 3M, Netflix, Zappos.com, JetBlue, Facebook and more such companies -- suggest as much. Pink has little to say about the unmotivated piece of work fixing your sub over at the gas station, or about the housekeeper cleaning your hotel room at the La Quinta during your April Florida vacation.The author himself would deny this, of course, and in his defense, he does briefly address the issue of non-creative repetitive labor: "Whether you’re fixing sinks, ringing up groceries, selling cars, or writing a lesson plan, you and I need autonomy just as deeply as a great painter." But, he continues, the majority of us will at first struggle when thrown into the deep waters of "undiluted autonomy", and hence "Organizations must provide ... 'scaffolding' to help every employee find his footing to make the transition." Fair enough, but what does this "scaffolding" entail in a practical sense? It doesn't become very clear from proceeding through Pink's pages.Next follow some Rousseauian observations about human nature that the grand master of philosophical folly could himself have whipped up: "We're designed to be Type I [motivated by intrinsic desires]. But outside forces -- including the very idea that we need to be 'managed' -- have conspired to change our default setting and turn us into Type X [motivated by extrinsic desires]. If we update the environments we're in -- not only at work, but also at school and at home -- and if leaders recognize both the truth of the human condition and the science that supports it, we can return ourselves and our colleagues to our natural state." And, quoting a researcher on the topic: "The course of human history has always moved in the direction of greater freedom. And there's a reason for that -- because it's in our nature to push for it."I'm sorry, but human history is not moving unstoppably towards greater freedom any more than I, employer, am suppressing my workers' creative nature by setting deadlines and doling out incentives. What is happening here is that we in the West have arrived at an utter anomaly in human history in which the battle for basic subsistence has been won (for now) and that we are at liberty to enjoy the unprecedented luxuries brought forth by science, technology and the arts. It is certainly true that these fields are driven forward by man's intrinsic curiosity and desire to create new things, and the fact that they have thrust our civilization -- if not humanity at large -- to great heights should instill an enormous dose of gratitude and humility in us.But back down on Earth, real goods still need to be produced, not just dreamed up by hipster types: Oil and gas need to be pumped to the surface, corn and wheat have to be harvested, cars need to be assembled, hotel rooms need to be cleaned, restaurant meals have to be cooked, and homes need to be built. Much of the production of these goods revolves around basic, repetitive tasks and invokes a certain level of dread and boredom. From my personal experience, the majority of workers involved want to work just enough hours for their paycheck to hold them over to the next one (and who can blame them?). The successful completion of their tasks is contingent upon a supervisor setting clear expectations, checking for quality of work after the fact, and showing gratitude for good behavior by continuing the employment relationship and handing out a nice paycheck.None of this is to say that “Drive” isn't worth your valuable time. As with many such works, one takes a few good ideas and runs with them. While I can't afford to allow my employees to spend twenty percent of their time brainstorming about new products or process improvements, there's nothing stopping me from empowering them to have a say in how things are done in my company. So how about coming together for a half-day plenary session every three months and allow the staff to blurt out any idea that might have popped up in their head? I might just give it a try.With all this in mind, I would recommend this book to certain types of readers, such as consultants, employers or the budding and dreaming entrepreneur. Just don't expect to be blown away by every word you're reading.

Motivation 1.0 is our basic need of survival. It's the simplest level of motivation and there isn't much time spent on this topic.Motivation 2.0 is what Pink believes to be an outdated model. We use these tools to encourage or reinforce positive behaviors and to curb behaviors we want to eliminate.Pink shows, through research and studies, that adding monetary incentives does not inspire us like many have believed. It only serves as a temporary boost but winds up fading fast.Instead, Pink believes we need to move to Motivation 3.0. This is where we are inspired by internal drivers rather than external factors.There are three main themes to 3.0 with autonomy, mastery and purpose. These are the driving factors that need to be fostered in order to motivate us. I gotta be honest, I expected more from this book, especially with all the reviews. In a nutshell, it tells you that people are driven by the need for fulfillment. It makes a valid point that we want to feel important at our job and in our life, but the rest of it is just fluff. I also found it a boring and dry read.I read "It's Okay to be the Boss" after this book and found it to be IMMENSELY better and effective (I've been practicing the teachings of "It's Okay to be the Boss" for a couple weeks now and have already seen many positive effects.) In terms of readability and effectiveness, I'd recommend "It's Okay to be the Boss" over this one 1000 times. (100% not a paid review btw. Honest opinion.)

Drive was an interesting read, definitely a 'Leadership' / 'self-improvement' type book. However, it did become repetitive and it lost my attention about half way through. I would consider this an airport book - something you pick up to read because you are bored, but not a must have or a re-read book. This book presents the most important stages of the development of the Qur'an in a very simple way. The author was fair and academic in presenting the Muslim faith, and impressed me by his ability of quoting authentic Islamic resources to support his points.One of the very interesting points that this book raised in the Islamic development of understanding the difference between Tahreef Al Maana (changing the meaning) and Tahreef Al-Nass (Changing the text). Many of the Christians in America, and many Islamic scholars as well, don't understand the importance of this point in the Christian-Muslim dialogue, and many books overlooked it. Dr. White, on the opposite, was able to simplify this concept, and help Christians to utilizes it to communicate the Gospel of Christ to Muslims.As an Arab Christian who is specialized in Islam, I can say that I recommend this book for both Christians and Muslims alike. For Muslims, because it shines the light on some concepts and doctrines that Muslims often tend to overlook. And for Christians because it equips them to understand Islam and the Qur'an in a deeper level than many other books presents.Dr. White, once again, gave us a book that is worth reading.

As someone who is familiar with both Christianity and Islam, I found Dr. White's book to be a very good read. As an Arab I was a little skeptical of whether or not the author could really relate to not only the doctrine of Islam and the words of the Quran, but the existential feeling of being a Muslim and somehow filter that through a Christian worldview. It was obvious to me that the author had done his homework and that this subject was important to him. With so much pseudo-intelligence regarding what Islam and the Quran state and believe so readily available, it is my hope that we get more books like this and that Mr. White continues writing on this topic.The only caveat is that this book is pretty involved. I find that many want sort of a crib notes on the Quran. This is not that. This is a work for those who have a serious desire to dig into the Quran.

I haven't finished it yet. The information is important, but it's somewhat difficult to read. The excerpts from the Qur'an and Hadith are especially challenging to figure out what it is saying. Sometimes he pasted it in there and moved on to another topic immediately without summarizing or analyzing the text or telling me why it was important, as if the message of the passage was completely self explanatory. One might argue perhaps the author was trying to keep himself out of it and let the reader form his own opinions, but since the purpose of the book is to teach, I don't think it applies. He could do a better job communicating.I do appreciate how much work he did preparing for the book. I myself would prefer not to invest so much time to study the Qur'an and Hadith directly in order to learn its message and better understand where Muslims are coming from. I'd rather to read books like this.Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus was much easier for me to read and it contained a lot of great information (major doctrinal differences between Christianity and Islam), besides being a thrilling account of God patiently demonstrating His love for the author.

I can't tell whether it's the subject matter, the writer's presentation and style, or both, but trying to read through this book is a very tedious exercise. If, as a Christian, you have the opportunity to talk to a Muslim about specific topics in Islam, the book would probably be useful to refer to topic by topic. But trying to read it through was all but impossible for me. And way too many substantive footnotes.One other general criticism: I wish the author had devoted some time to the "big picture" that the Quran is supposed to be presenting. I mean, if you ask what the "big picture" of the Bible is, one example would be that it's a narrative of God's efforts to reach out to mankind (the calling of Abraham, of Moses, the giving of the Law, the prophets, the Incarnation...). Can anything analogous be said about the Quran? The author here is more interested into getting into the weeds.

This is a very useful and detailed insight to the Qu'ran and the Muslim faith. I recommend that every Christian who is desperate to see Muslims come to Christian faith should read this book and gain the necessary insight to witness effectively and lovingly to the Muslim community. James White has argued effectively the clear differences and shown the inconsistencies and errors of the scripture in light of the fact that the Qu'ran author's claim of directly divine authorship and link to the Christian scriptures.

Fantastic book. Solid, biblical teaching. No apologies from the Author. Dr James White fulfills the greatest of the commandments and teaches his reader the same. Like a hunter who seeks his prey, Dr White gives practical explanations about the Quran so we can be ready to give an answer by letting the Muslims know that we understand who they are and what their book teaches.

Excellent book for an overview of the Qu'ran. This is NOT an overview of Islam. James White has a desire to see Christians handle the Qu'ran handled appropriately just as we would want Muslims to handle the Bible correctly. The research and scholarship here is enhanced by years of interactions with Muslims. If your main agenda is discovery of reasons to look down on Muslims, then you should look for a different book. The title is apt, but the book itself is an education for all golfers. A great combination of the story of the Swinger's life and golf tips for all of us duffers. I wanted to know more about Al Stump, the co-author. It seems he had a reputation for fabricating things. I put down the book when Sam talked about raising bush babies, monkeys, whatever. But a little research - corroborated I think, by his own son, Jack - confirmed that Mr. Snead actually monkeyed around.In my opinion, Mr. Snead is one of the top 5 golfers of all time. Coming in 3rd in the '73 (?) PGA, two shots behind Lee Trevino at age 62? C'mon.But the most wonderful thing about this book is that I thought Sam was speaking, not Stump. Mr. Stump did a wonderful job.I would suggest, if you don't have them already. Shell's Wonderful World of Golf's Hogan versus Snead and Nicklaus versus Snead DVDs.Treasures.

I've read everything by Sam Snead in my 56 years playing the greatest sport ever. Sam is golf. Everything he says or does is tethered to golf. When he explains the golf swing, he is explaining how it feels, not some complicated formula checked or maybe even invented by a laptop. Even when he's describing a life event, it becomes a learning event for those of us that can only hope that unmatched natural talent can be passed on, even in a small amount.

One of the first golf books I ever read and this was "back in the day". I recently acquired it again for my Kindle and then purchased a hard bound copy (pre-owned) for my son who was graduating from college. I was stunned to learn that one of his 20-something golfer friend already had the book and loved it. This book is a timeless gem and now, decades later, the swing tips and strategy are just as valuable as ever and Snead's stories of the tour and its many characters and stars is a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Sam Snead describes himself as a hayseed hillbilly who made it on the PGA tour, and he convinced me beyond a doubt that was both a success in life, and that as a young man, he was a proverbial southern hillbilly from mountains of western Virginia. In this first person account, he tells his story. I bought the book because I enjoy reading about golf, love autobiographies, didn't know much about his life, and this book was cheap on Amazon. I was very entertained, throughout the book. I learned a lot about his contemporaries of which the book is loaded with anecdotes. I have to say that because of other books that I have read that mentions Sam anecdotally, I didn't expect such an honest entertaining read. I really have a new appreciation of this amazing character

If your a golfer, it is a must read. The book gives an interesting perspective of the early days of the PGA. Despite how long ago the book was written, it gives great instructional tips of the golf swing and how to play a variety of shots from different situations. In his unique style, he also imparts valuable tips on the mental part of the game.

I love reading about the lives of the golfers who made the game great! Sam Snead had an adventurous life and worked hard to make himself one of the greatest golfers of all time. Interesting read!

It's been a while since the 1940'a and styles have changed, but this is still an entertaining look at the life and times of one of golf's legnedary players. Somehow I doubt he was ever quite as "country" as Sam and his publicist's and biographer's would have us believe, but he certainly was a great and durable player and a generous and compassionate human being. And when he talks about how he came to understand his golf swing, it's way better than merely good!

Great book and learning a lot about a pro golfer that doesn't get much name recognition as most from his time period. Only bad thing the book has small print but that's the only bad thing. Must get for any golfer.

Tatkin bases his research on premises that include current research on marital therapy as well as on neuropsychology.He provides ten basic premises for maintaining a good marriage. He speaks often of the 'couple bubble'. This is a way for couples to put one another first, to keep themselves a priority for one another in spite of all the influx of information and experiences that come their way. Couples need to form a bubble, a safe place where they are available to one another 24/7 and they attempt to fulfill their partner's needs in any way they can. It goes both ways and it is a protective device.I also liked his analogy of 'ambassadors' and 'primitives'. Ambassadors are the rational aspects of our brain that steer our relationship. The primitives are the more basic aspects of survival that most of us have been programmed for as children. It is more of a 'fight or flight' component that each of us has. There needs to be an understanding in ourselves of these two components of our brain and, more importantly, depending on our upbringing, we may need to work on understanding what makes our partner tick.The book is accessible to anyone, therapist or layman. The information is very helpful and can be used by any married couple. Therapists will be pleased to see that Tatkin quotes the most recent research and incorporates it in his book. I found this book very intuitive and have used his suggestions in the therapy I already do. However, I have picked up some new ideas that I will surely incorporate in the future.

Quick read with some solid information. You have to make it through the beginning of the book and the short stories to get to the most helpful information - so don't give up. A little simplistically written and some of the anecdotes feel extraneous. Overall, defines the principles of personality type and background well later in the book and a good couples read that doesn't create finger pointing or take too much time.

I love this book and have bought copies to share with my family and friends. I had a couple bubble with a past boyfriend and it was like I was on cloud 9. My fiance is an island (dismissive avoidant) and is skeptical of the idea but I feel like this book will help aid us in creating our own couple bubble. The book provides an excellent explanation of what a couple bubble is, why it is so important for a healthy relationship, and practical advice for how to create your own. I wish it we're mandatory book for everyone to read in highschool or college.
