As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues. Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang. Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

From the Back Cover

“Hine has provided a brief and readable account of the long, complex history of the geologic development that lies beneath the gentle, low topography of Florida. He shows how many subtle features in the Florida landscape were shaped during this history.”—Paul Enos, University of Kansas “Seven hundred million years of time go whizzing by in this beautifully illustrated account of Florida’s geologic history. The story centers on the long and intimate relationship between Florida and her enveloping seas, beginning with wandering continents, continuing through the ‘carbonate factory’ in the sea that produced much of the volume of the Florida Peninsula, and ending with the story of sand grains on Florida beaches hundreds of miles from their points of origin. For those curious about their natural surroundings, Albert Hine’s book will surely open a new window and a new appreciation for the complexity and beauty of nature in Florida.”—Orrin Pilkey, coauthor of Global Climate Change: A PrimerThe saga of Florida’s geological development started approximately 700 million years ago. It began as the state’s basement rocks migrated nearly 12,600 kilometers from their position within a supercontinent at the Earth’s South Pole to their present location north of the equator, participating in the assembly and disassembly of one of Earth’s greatest supercontinents, Pangea. In this complete geologic history of the Sunshine State, Albert Hine takes the reader on a journey that begins with the breaking apart of Pangea and ends with the emergence of south Florida and the Keys; explaining the shape and form of the state as we know it today. Geologic History of Florida chronicles the creation of the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the western Atlantic Ocean, and other major events in Florida’s geologic past. It looks back 160 million years, to a time when the ancient igneous and metamorphic basement rocks were covered by a large sedimentary carbonate platform nearly 3 miles thick, known as the Florida Platform. Today, Florida still rests upon this larger geologic feature, fifty percent of which is submerged. Consequently, the geologic story of the state includes what lies beneath the seafloor as much as it involves the land surface. Writing in a clear and accessible manner, Hine discusses the geologic changes of the Florida Platform, from dissolution tectonics, which formed great underwater caverns and sinkholes, to the plate collision with Cuba. Hine explains geological phenomenon like the influx of quartz-rich sand from the southern Appalachian Mountains that made Florida’s white-sand beaches a destination for tourists from around the world. He examines the state’s phosphate-rich deposits, which account for thirty percent of the world’s phosphate production, and other hot-button issues such as oil drilling and climate change. With a glossary of essential terms at the end of each chapter, Geologic History of Florida will be an invaluable resource for geologists, students of Earth history, and anyone interested in how the Sunshine State physically came to be.

Disclaimer: In the spring of 2013, as a graduate student in Florida Studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, I took the course in Geological History of Florida taught by Dr. Albert C. Hine. Dr. Hine is an engaging teacher, whose reach extends far beyond just the bare geological facts of Florida to embrace our participation in its life -- he is an exemplar of an excellent Florida Studies professor, as well as a boots-on-the-ground scientist. He is also thoroughly "Floridated," as I call it, being originally from Massachusetts -- he shows up to class in sandals, shorts, and a Florida-print casual shirt. That's how we roll in Florida. This book, in manuscript, was the main text for the class. The finished product is impressive. The abundant and lavish illustrations blend with and illuminate the text well, as did the slides in Dr. Hine's lectures in class. On the first front pages are three handy references: a geologic time scale, a graph of sea level through time, and a geologic map of Florida. Throughout the book, other useful references appear, such as a conversion table of English to metric measurement. At the end of each chapter are lists of "Essential Points to Know," "Essential Terms to Know," "Keywords" [sic], and "Essential References to Know." Paying attention to these lists will enhance understanding of the text.Chapter One begins with the essential Florida Studies question: What is Florida? Dr. Hine, in this chapter, answers the question geologically. You'll be surprised at the actual geologic scope of Florida. In Chapter Two, he moves on to the beginning of the story of Florida's geologic history, 700 million years ago! As a result of his lecture and his illustrations, as reproduced in this chapter, I understand Pangea and Gondwanaland much more than I ever did before. By the end of the book, the reader has a much greater understanding and appreciation for Florida.I highly recommend this book not only for students of Florida Studies, and Floridians generally, but for anyone interested in any aspect of the Earth sciences.

Very well written, understandable in ways that have stuck with me.

I am enjoying this book, but was disappointed that the author did not include information about the heavy mineral sands mining in the state.

What everyone else said.

The Geologic History of Florida is a wonderful introduction to the geology and natural history of one of our country’s most popular destinations. Written by a geological oceanography professor at the University of South Florida, the book provides enough rigor and detail to satisfy someone with a background in the subject but is also highly accessible to the educated layman with an interest in Florida in particular and geology in general. The author, Albert Hine, discusses the origin of Florida’s beautiful quartz sands while explaining the weathering of mountains; he explains how Florida and its Caribbean neighbors arrived at their current locations through the jigsaw puzzle process of plate tectonics; he explains how the carbonate substructure and abundant vegetation leads to the ubiquitous sinkholes and how ancient sea creatures have made Florida the world leader in phosphate production. Hine also addresses topics of concern to current residents of Florida, including water, climate change and offshore oil drilling.I was especially impressed by the structure of the book, which combines the best features of a textbook such as straightforward organization, hierarchical presentation of information, and frequent definition of terms, with a highly readable and enthusiastic writing style. The author has divided the book up into short, easily digestible topics arranged in chronological order starting about 700 million years ago and continuing up to the present (and into the future!). At the end of each chapter are a series of summary statements that reinforce central concepts and a glossary of terms from that chapter. Hine also provides an extensive reference list at the end of each chapter. The works listed include technical journal articles, textbooks, general interest books, and technical reports. When possible, he has included digital object identifiers (doi) so that the reader can locate material online.Although Hine does not presume prior knowledge of geology, he does not shy away from the use of technical language or concepts. Instead he takes time to define terms and introduces new ideas in a simple, gradual way. As someone with scientific training, but not in the field of geology, I appreciated how the author did not oversimplify complex ideas or trivialize scientific uncertainties. The University Press of Florida spared no expense in illustrating this attractive book. There is barely a page without one or more color photographs (some helpfully annotated), schematic diagrams, or figures from historical or modern research articles. The figures greatly enhance the factual content and express ideas that words cannot. Although technical figures can sometimes be daunting, I found it highly worth my time to read the captions and examine the figures and photographs carefully as I went along. As a college educator in a different scientific field, I think this textbook would serve undergraduates very well because of its structure, focus and attractive layout. It is the perfect length for a one-semester course and if you live in or near Florida, it would be an excellent companion for geological field trips. Similarly, a layman traveling to Florida or the Caribbean would doubtless enjoy tracking down some of the formations and features described in this book.

Wilma Rudolph's spirit is triumphantly present in this biography. Younger readers will come to admire the runner as much as the rest of us do. The vocabulary and action in this story are just right for children's early interest. Such an amazing woman -- I am glad to read such an excellent biography of her, written for young people.

This book is so lyrically and descriptively written that you can hear, taste, smell, see, and feel the South. The words fit together so perfectly it is almost as if you can remember the things about which the author writes. As a Southerner who feels that the media sometimes asks us to feel ashamed of the area of my birth, I was thrilled to read the authors impressions were somewhat akin to mine. The South is a wonderful place that is widely misunderstood. Yes, we do have our problems as do the other areas of the country. The author ran from her dysfunctional family, not the South. She proved this when she came back to her roots. The South celebrates the family ties that span the generations, even if some of those ties are unhealthy. The author has painted a word portrait so vivid that the reader feels as if he/she has had an extended visit to the places she describes. Mayes has a sense of place that is rivaled only by Lee Smith. Lee Smith makes the reader"know Appalachia while Mayes lets the reader know the South.

This is a purposefully slow read, a pleasant read.I didn't grow up in the South, any part of it; but I felt a connection to Fitzgerald, Georgia, the author's hometown. Thinking about it now, I think it's a connection to a simpler time that I feel, the kind of life Mayes describes was the life of America's small towns and incipient suburbs of the 1950s. Much of what Mayes describes in terms of social interaction cut across America then. The main differences that I noted were Mayes' emphases on the outdoor life of a Southern girl, the heady atmosphere of Fitzgerald-- the smells of flowers, bushes, rain and river that permeated Mayes' being. This lushness was magnified in her-- and then later in her writing.Outside of the sense of place, Mayes paints a vivid picture of her family. We find out just who her parents were, who her grandfather Jack was, about her beloved maid. These people, most important to her, receive almost microscopic attention so that we really know them and feel what young Frances felt growing up.There's plenty of discord in Frances'young life, plenty of sorrow; but this memoir doesn't come across as bitter, caustic or maudlin. The author mostly escapes her family's troubles through immersion in books, boys and parties. Mayes' early memories and tales will feel familiar in large part, a good life overpowering the bad.

I thoroughly enjoyed Under Magnolia. I have read all of the books by Frances Mayes and am never disappointed. I found the imagery in this book to be very powerful - so evocative of the time. Interestingly I was reading Under Magnolia at the same time as I watched the film The Help. I watched The Help late one night and the next morning when I resumed reading Under Magnolia I felt as though it was familiar - the same feelings, the same sense of the South of the times. If I could write better I would be able to better describe how I felt. It was a very satisfying feeling. I love the way Frances Mayes can draw such wonderful pictures with her words without flowery language. Just a few words to get her message across but words so well chosen. I loved the way she describes her interactions with Willie Bell and the different way she describes her mother and their relationship. Such a variety of emotions - so thought provoking yet so economically described. The young Frances is a brat and gets away with a lot but she's a charmer with a wonderful imagination too. I was sorry when I came to the last page but immensely satisfied too. A lovely book.

If you read Under the Tuscan Sun, and who did not ? , you will want to know more about Frances Mayes. If you missed Under the Tuscan Sun, stop now and find a copy and read it. If you did read it, now is the time to follow Frances Mayes from California back to the south. First stop her Georgia home town and her years growing up Southern style. Next making a brief stop at her southern college life, next her exit from the south for a long stay in California ( and Italy), and then her return to living again in the south. With Frances Mayes as your tour guide you are sure to enjoy the journey, as well as the peek into the life that formed Frances Mayes the educator, the poet, the novelist, the writer, and the ultimate travel guide,. Now, while you are reading Under Magnolia and learning all the secrets about her real southern life, and why she was so anxious to leave it, I think I will go with her on a trip to Italy by re-reading Under the Tuscan Sun. Sometimes memoir reads like good fiction, enjoy.

This story is more like a poem than a novel. It is written as a memoir, so there is little suspense about what happens, but the author keeps your attention more by how and what she feels than what she does. The imagery of the South is entirely evocative of the real sights, smells, and sounds that recall memories to anyone who shared them. Her voice sounds to my ear, to be that of a girl like me. It sounds true and familiar. I hear her wistfulness ring throughout, even when she is recalling good times. That's a very Southern, F. Scott Fitzgerald, way to write. By the end of the story, she has given you the story of her life, but you were listening more than reading it.

A well written memory of the author's childhood and adolescence . She does an excellent job of describing the personalities of her family and facing the strong feelings of love while accepting the unpleasantness of some very strong negative perceptions. She can vividly recall the scents and smell of the South. At times I could smell the red dirt and feel the heat of the hot summer in her writing. If you have not experienced chiggers and ticks it would be difficult to appreciate the underlying humor that is evident in her writing. Over all I think it is an excellently told story of coming of age in the 1950-60 South.

#1,292,687 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

O'Reilly should be ashamed to scam their readers into buying what looks like an updated edition of DNS and Bind but is really a 37 page glorified pamphlet. The forward actually begins with an apology, as well it should. O'Reilly should either partially refund at least $20 to everyone who purchased this or else send everyone a free copy of the latest DNS and Bind that they thought they were buying.

All in all very little content and too high level to be useful, it's more like a pamphlet than a book with only a few pages. Like most people in IT, I have a working knowledge of what IPv6 is but wanted the details on how an implementation works. This wasn't up to snuff; it's basically 30 bucks for a wikipedia entry, I ended up returning my copy. I'm not sure who the audience is for; it will be far too basic for most people in technology, but a novice or non-IT person wouldn'tNote this is not a dig against O'Reilly or the Author; just this particular book. I'd highly recommend DNS and Bind book from the same author, and have many many O'Reilly books. However this one has too little information to be useful, and costs as much as a full sized book. I'd recommend bumping up and buying a current edition of DNS and BIND; it costs about the same, from the same author, and will be a much better use of your time.-Jay

While this book covers its subject matter well I was disappoint by its small size for the price. I would have expected it to be about a third of the price.

DNS & Bind on IPv6 is ok; I don't like having to jump here and there to find what I'm looking for. The order and examples need to be improved.

nice reference on DNS and Bind on IPv6

The information that I needed.

DNS & BIND on IPv6 is a short (37 pages e-book, 52 pages print) text that could be considered an IPv6 appendix to the author's book on DNS. It provides a brief introduction to IPv6 addressing, then moves directly into some of the new record types and configurations necessary to allow BIND to support IPv6.I would consider this a useful booklet for active BIND administrators. The information is available elsewhere, particularly in the RFC's dealing with DNS and IPv6, but this is a much more convenient and succinct format. Background knowledge of DNS and the operation of BIND is assumed by the author, and the material would be far less useful without that foundation. Those with an interest in network security or design may also find this material of interest, although it does not directly address those areas.Overall a good resource from an authoritative source, you will have to decide whether the purchase price is justified for such a brief volume.

For those of you who have supported an Internet connection and/or run your own DNS servers have probably heard about DNS and BIND by Cricket Liu and Paul Albitz. That one has been in my library for several years and I don't see it going away anytime soon. As you increase your knowledge about IPv6, getting the best information available on dealing with DNS and BIND will serve you well.As well as you may know DNS and BIND, there will be differences when it comes to IPv6. Between setting up AAAA records and setting up reverse lookups, why learn by the school of hard knocks, when you can spend your time productively by getting IPv6 fully enabled in your environment as quickly as possible ? Your experience with IPv4 based DNS will serve a good foundation as you move into the world of IPv6.This book isn't just about the server-side of IPv6 configuration. You also go over the client configuration as well as touch on areas such as Dynamic Resolver Configuration, NAT64 and DNS64. Just when you think you have it all covered, then you can start delving into Registering and Delegating to IPv6 Name Servers. This isn't something that you will have running flawlessly overnight but with this book on your bookshelf, you will have the information handy when you really need it.This is another book that is available from O'Reilly Media in one of several formats that available on just about any mobile device that you can think of. One good thing about having the book in digital format is that it gives you the option cutting and pasting the examples that Cricket has in the book and putting them into the zone file you are working on. It will be a great help in getting the syntax and file setup correct.
