This book is so lyrically and descriptively written that you can hear, taste, smell, see, and feel the South. The words fit together so perfectly it is almost as if you can remember the things about which the author writes. As a Southerner who feels that the media sometimes asks us to feel ashamed of the area of my birth, I was thrilled to read the authors impressions were somewhat akin to mine. The South is a wonderful place that is widely misunderstood. Yes, we do have our problems as do the other areas of the country. The author ran from her dysfunctional family, not the South. She proved this when she came back to her roots. The South celebrates the family ties that span the generations, even if some of those ties are unhealthy. The author has painted a word portrait so vivid that the reader feels as if he/she has had an extended visit to the places she describes. Mayes has a sense of place that is rivaled only by Lee Smith. Lee Smith makes the reader"know Appalachia while Mayes lets the reader know the South.

This is a purposefully slow read, a pleasant read.I didn't grow up in the South, any part of it; but I felt a connection to Fitzgerald, Georgia, the author's hometown. Thinking about it now, I think it's a connection to a simpler time that I feel, the kind of life Mayes describes was the life of America's small towns and incipient suburbs of the 1950s. Much of what Mayes describes in terms of social interaction cut across America then.The main differences that I noted were Mayes' emphases on the outdoor life of a Southern girl, the heady atmosphere of Fitzgerald-- the smells of flowers, bushes, rain and river that permeated Mayes' being. This lushness was magnified in her-- and then later in her writing.Outside of the sense of place, Mayes paints a vivid picture of her family. We find out just who her parents were, who her grandfather Jack was,about her beloved maid. These people,most important to her, receive almost microscopic attention so that we really know them and feel what young Frances felt growing up.There's plenty of discord in Frances'young life, plenty of sorrow; but this memoir doesn't come across as bitter, caustic or maudlin. The author mostly escapes her family's troubles through immersion in books, boys and parties. Mayes' early memories and tales will feel familiar in large part, a good life overpowering the bad.

I thoroughly enjoyed Under Magnolia. I have read all of the books by Frances Mayes and am never disappointed. I found the imagery in this book to be very powerful - so evocative of the time. Interestingly I was reading Under Magnolia at the same time as I watched the film The Help. I watched The Help late one night and the next morning when I resumed reading Under Magnolia I felt as though it was familiar - the same feelings, the same sense of the South of the times. If I could write better I would be able to better describe how I felt. It was a very satisfying feeling. I love the way Frances Mayes can draw such wonderful pictures with her words without flowery language. Just a few words to get her message across but words so well chosen. I loved the way she describes her interactions with Willie Bell and the different way she describes her mother and their relationship. Such a variety of emotions - so thought provoking yet so economically described. The young Frances is a brat and gets away with a lot but she's a charmer with a wonderful imagination too. I was sorry when I came to the last page but immensely satisfied too. A lovely book.

Sometimes memoir reads like good fiction, enjoy.

This story is more like a poem than a novel. It is written as a memoir, so there is little suspense about what happens, but the author keeps your attention more by how and what she feels than what she does.The imagery of the South is entirely evocative of the real sights, smells, and sounds that recall memories to anyone who shared them. Her voice sounds to my ear, to be that of a girl like me. It sounds true and familiar. I hear her wistfulness ring throughout, even when she is recalling good times. That's a very Southern, F. Scott Fitzgerald, way to write. By the end of the story, she has given you the story of her life, but you were listening more than reading it.

A well written memory of the author's childhood and adolescence . She does an excellent job of describing the personalities of her family and facing the strong feelings of love while accepting the unpleasantness of some very strong negative perceptions. She can vividly recall the scents and smell of the South. At times I could smell the red dirt and feel the heat of the hot summer in her writing. If you have not experienced chiggers and ticks it would be difficult to appreciate the underlying humor that is evident in her writing. Over all I think it is an excellently told story of coming of age in the 1950-60 South.

I'm not sure who the audience is for; it will be far too basic for most people in technology, but a novice or non-IT person wouldn'tNote this is not a dig against O'Reilly or the Author; just this particular book. I'd highly recommend DNS and Bind book from the same author, and have many many O'Reilly books. However this one has too little information to be useful, and costs as much as a full sized book. I'd recommend bumping up and buying a current edition of DNS and BIND; it costs about the same, from the same author, and will be a much better use of your time.-Jay

While this book covers its subject matter well I was disappoint by its small size for the price. I would have expected it to be about a third of the price.

DNS & Bind on IPv6 is ok; I don't like having to jump here and there to find what I'm looking for. The order and examples need to be improved.

DNS & BIND on IPv6 is a short (37 pages e-book, 52 pages print) text that could be considered an IPv6 appendix to the author's book on DNS. It provides a brief introduction to IPv6 addressing, then moves directly into some of the new record types and configurations necessary to allow BIND to support IPv6.I would consider this a useful booklet for active BIND administrators. The information is available elsewhere, particularly in the RFC's dealing with DNS and IPv6, but this is a much more convenient and succinct format. Background knowledge of DNS and the operation of BIND is assumed by the author, and the material would be far less useful without that foundation.Those with an interest in network security or design may also find this material of interest, although it does not directly address those areas.Overall a good resource from an authoritative source, you will have to decide whether the purchase price is justified for such a brief volume.

Actually, this is two books written by two different participants in the endeavor. Also, some loosely related excerpts of other similar stories.What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 113,907.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes.Are there other books by this author that might also be helpful? On this topic, no, but the publisher has an extensive library of historical titles that may interest historians, especially regarding the Chesapeake Bay.Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? None that are significant.Is it a quick, easy read? Not really. This is more of a leisure read than a quick read. A book to savor.What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? English but of a different sort than commonly spoken these days. Bear in mind, it is largely comprised of a book first published in "the 46th year after" American independence from England. The writing style is absent of foul language but is more passively written than present day writing. Beware, though, there are some disturbing scenes, albeit, not graphic in detail, but, in any language, cannibalism is repugnant to most.My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? The first part of the book, written by a survivor of the Whale Ship Essex, was both facinating and inspiring. It is remarkable that anyone could survive the ordeal of being in an open boat at sea thousands of miles from land for such an extended period of time. The second part of the book, composed mostly of newspaper articles written when whaling was a prosperous business and before whales were scarce due to overfishing, gives added information about the dangers of whaling. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it especially to those who appreciate first hand sources and accounts written in the time period events occurred.

This fine work begins with a well written report on the Whale Ship Essex and its sinking by a whale attack. Owen Chase was a crew member and survivor who authored this work. This incident is source material for Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" and is referred to in that novel. Owen Chase also gives an account of what it is like to be on a whaling voyage. I enjoyed all aspects of this work very much.The work being reviewed does not end with Owen Chase's account. There is an account by another survivor. Then there is various narratives about cannabilism both in the Pacific Islands and other places. Some of the reports are about starving people and have little or nothing to do with either the Pacific or whaling. I suppose the authors are comparing what various peoples resort to when starving, as the survivors of the Essex faced the same dilemma.This second part of the book is followed by other whaling stories. I found those stories mildly interesting. Some of them occur after the novel "Moby Dick" was written and therefore are not source material for that work. They are interesting tales of the sea. "My Cousin Dolphin" is my personal favorite account. I believe another reviewer referred to this part as "filler". I respect and understand that opinion. I was also left with the feeling that the whaling industry was unbelievably cruel. Perhaps that is just a difference in the age I live in. Thank You...

While it may lack the personal conflict of Moby Dick and Captain Ahab, the Wreck of the Whale Ship Essex made me feel as if I were an eyewitness to the bravery, courage and feelings of guilt and despondency of the men of the Essex.Not only the narratives of the first mate and the young seaman riveting made me feel as if i were a witness to there trials and tribulations.I highly reccomand this book to any fan of history,seaman ship and a extreamly interesting book!

You’ve got to read this. I read most of it in one sitting. It’s heartbreaking and horrible, but I couldn’t stop reading.There were also surprises about what they did after the whale attack when they had little chance of survival. I won’t be too specific about it because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but the author states that companionship meant so much to them that they sometimes stayed together even when it lessened the chance of survival. The author isn’t trying to make a point about the nobility of the human spirit. He states it as a mere fact.My review is of the 87 page Owen Chase account of the Essex. The book also contains several other stories and newspaper articles of varying quality about this period of whaling. Apparently, these kinds of whale attacks weren't common, but were frequent enough to be well known.The illustrations are lackluster, but, come on, it’s an e-book. If you can find a cheaper version of the Owen Chase account without illustrations, go for it.3.5 stars

This is a good book, telling sad truths about our whaling days. I read most of it with great interest, cannot say enjoyment, not because of the author and the writing style but because of my, some would say "bleeding heart" sadness of the story. If you want a well written, factual book on this subject, this is the one for you! If you want information to "look at" on this subject, go to the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA.

Good resource to quickly learn about what happened to the whaling ship, Essex. This is the ship that was immortalized in Melville's Moby Dick.The first half of the book is Owen Chase's (first mate of the Essex) eyewitness account of the 1819 battle with the whale and the shipwreck that left the crew at sea for 93 days. Following Chase's personal account are many newspaper clippings and short stories of either the same event or similar whale experiences in the Pacific Ocean. Through reading this book, I learned numerous facts of the dangers and adventures that came with boarding a whaling ship, particularly during the 1800s and very early 1900s.Ken Rossignol, as editor and compiler, does a supreme job of weaving together a historical tale that many will enjoy. An engrossing read.Recommended for maritime enthusiasts or as a companion to the classic piece of literature known as Moby Dick.

When I read Part I and the sufferings of those who departed from the Essex in what we would call lifeboats, I felt like I was right there, suffering from starvation and thirst. Owen Chase's writings are the diary or log of day-to-day experiences. Imagine being in one of three small, often-leaky boats with 5-6 others and losing sight of the others at night. Imagine being 2,500 miles from land. Before the days of radios and flares.Thomas Nickerson gives a good account, too, in Part II.Ken Rossignol does a great job of bringing these almost-lost stories back for today's readers. How long could you hold out and not give up hope? Every sailor should have a copy of this book.

Almost no iOS awareness in this one, which is a bad idea from my point of view because android is as much a screen door as a windows machine (even with linux enhancements), but hey: I’m just still learning here. But, most infosec people fake it til they make it, so. There’s that.

“I don’t know what the hell my folks was drinkin’ the day they decided it was a good idea to name me Thaddeus Beauregard, but like I said, folks just call me Mount.”When I read the line above I was sold on this book. I love a character with a sense of humor. If you are a fan of William Johnstone and his Mountain Man series you will love this book. Don’t misunderstand…this is not a copycat by any means but it has that wonderful old-fashioned pot likker kind of feel to it. I loved it but then I am a fan of the hunter-trapper, fair is fair, come sit by my fire and lean on your saddle, kind of novel.This book is written in the narration or story-telling mode. Mount tells the story of life in the Rockies and the dangers of travel and of every day life. The dialect is very authentic of the times and of the man but not difficult to read or understand. There can be no question that Blumhagen is good at developing characters as well as creating great scene description. This is not a long book and I sure would have loved more to read. Not that I felt the story was unfinished, I just wanted more to read because it’s good.This is the third book in the Mount series. It is well worth the time to read it and I’m going to try out books 1 & 2.originally posted at long and short reviews
