Certainly a story that deserves to be told. Never got through more than the first 20-30 pages. The illustrations style is very repetitive -- black and purple drawings, page after page. Hard to keep interested. Plus there are many celebs included. The artist drew some of them well but some of them hard to believe that this was indeed the person intended.

Was looking forward to getting the history of the Apollo.I expected the storyline to be clearer but it rambles. Graphic are okay not the best.

This is the best book i have read read about the Apollo. Learning the history and going through the decades was so immersive.

If you love American pop music, especially r&b, or you love New York or you enjoy history, this book is for you. It's a lot of fun.

Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of Harlem’s Legendary Theater is clearly an adaptation of a prose work, with text boxes explaining key moments in the location’s history, but the illustrations add more hooks to show the reader just how important this Harlem entertainment venue has been. (It marks its 85th anniversary in 2019!) So many big names played there when they visited New York City, and amateurs could launch a career if they went over well.It’s marvelous to see so many artists portrayed and quotes included, making this almost an oral history. Smith does a great job with the likenesses. They’re not photo-realistic but still recognizable while still demonstrating artistic style. I found Fox’s inclusion as a character a helpful guidepost to how the book came to be as well. It’s astounding how many people wanted to talk to him about this subject, passing him around to share their stories. Superstars like Elvis and the Beatles even make cameo appearances, wanting to see performers there. Playing the Apollo put a stamp of legitimacy on up-and-coming acts.Beyond being a significant performance venue, it was a community anchor for a group that didn’t find as much acceptance elsewhere. When not playing, people shared gossip, gambled, and gave each other tips. Chapters cover* the development of Harlem as an entertainment destination in the early years of the 1900s* the Schiffmans, the Jewish family that owned the theater, their hardball tactics, and the varied ways they were perceived by the community* some of the most famous bands, comedians, and dancers to play the Apollo* the legend of Amateur Night and its demanding audience* the invention of bebop and later, rhythm and blues* changes in the business with the advent of records and rock’n’roll* gospel revues and their effect on more commercial soul music* the tough times when the theater went dark in the late 70s and later ownership changes, leading to an eventual renovationAn afterword by Fox explains how the original book came together. Showtime at the Apollo reads more like an illustrated history than a true graphic novel. Even when the pictures alone could tell the tale, there is a text box labeling what is depicted. The artwork is clear. Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of Harlem's Legendary Theater by Ted Fox is a graphic novel adaptation of the author's 1983 history of the historic Harlem theater with a few new updates. The African-American theater has a legendary musical history with the best of the best performers gracing its stage. Fox's graphic novel brings the rich musical history and cultural significance of the Apollo to life. Even though I read an unfinished copy of the ARC, I still enjoyed the history lesson the author presents. It's fantastic that he covers from the moment it was built to the present, but I definitely found myself most interested in its earlier days from the 1930s through the 1940s. Anyway, like I mentioned before, I read an unfinished ARC and quite a bit of the artwork is either not there or rough sketches (sometimes just circles where people were supposed to appear on the page). Even though it I believe I still got all of the text from the pages, I still felt a bit out of the loop since I was missing a significant portion of this history.

For example, in less than 20 pages Gerald faces the following: the death of a close friend (a passenger in a car that was driven by a drunk teammate); the discovery of his drunk, evil stepfather trying to sexually assault his younger stepsister; a brutal attack by his stepfather; and a raging apartment fire that threatens to kill them all. It’s very hard to read about abuse. It is painful to read about child abuse. I didn’t have to struggle through this one; but, had it been longer, I might have. Draper is able to deliver a powerful story within 156 pages.This story focuses on Gerald, a player on Hazelwood High’s basketball team, and also from the first book, Tears of a Tiger. We get to start from the beginning with his character. We get to visualize the hell he’s been through his whole life, starting with his mother’s addiction to drugs. After she leaves him alone at the age of 3, there’s a fire that nearly kills him and he’s sent to live with his aunt. When he is a teenager, his mother comes back into his life on the same day that his aunt passes away. Things go from bad to worse for Gerald. He not only has to deal with abuse from his step-father, he learns real quickly that his step-father is sexually abusing his little sister. Gerald uses himself as a barrier between the two, and vows to protect his little sister.There’s so much drama going down in this little book! It’s not a long read, thank God, but you get way more than you think with these characters. I always wondered what would become of Gerald when I was re-reading Tears of a Tiger. There are stories that need to be told, but it’s up to the reader to brave it’s content. If you or someone that you know has ever been abused, both physically and sexually, then this book will be painful to read. I can say that I won’t be revisiting this book, simply because of the subject matter. The writing is flawless and filled with so much emotion. I will read Draper’s books all day, but this one I don’t think will make my re-read list.Recommend? Yes, especially if you have read the first book. This is also a book (series) that deserves more praise than it has gotten. Simply put, Draper is an amazing writer when it comes to African-American culture. She makes you see that things aren’t always as they appear, and misjudgments among society breeds ignorance from every turn. I for one, can’t get enough of her work. Highly recommend!

It starts with him setting the house on fire by accident, while home alone. Because of this he goes to stay with his aunt until his mother is released from jail. On his tenth birthday his mother appears to take him home and his aunt dies. He moves in with his mom, her husband Jordan and her daughter Angel.Gerald finds out that Jordan is hitting his mother (Monique) and abusing his little sister. He gets help from his friends father and Jordan is arrested and sent to jail. After he gets out of jail he goes back and joins the family. Jordan no longer abused Angel but continued to hit Gerald and Monique. Gerald and Angel had a very positive relationship.In high school Gerald makes the basketball team and begin to make friends with the other boys on the team. One night there is a car accident where the captain of the team gets killed. Gerald is sad and confused because he couldn't do anything about the death of his friend.I recommend this book to anyone that doesn't really like reading, like me, because it keeps your attention.

Let me start by saying I am a social worker whose whole career has been working with youth and families. I read this story because it was on my daughter's reading list for battle of book. I like to know what my teen is reading. I was very moved by this tell. As a social worker we see the situation from one angle and try to work with the family where they are. I appreciated the getting to look at the internal thoughts of those involved in the situation. I think it so easy as a worker or even just as a neighbor, a teacher, church member to get jaded about or question our role in situations of abuse. This story reminds us what's at stake when we fail to be vigilant and what we gain when we offer that life line in the darkness just as Mr Washington offers to Gerald and Angel.

Andrea Nguyen's Viet spirit, her vast experience, her pragmatism, and her reasonable and logical way of doing things come shining through in this, her newest cook book. She is a real star in my opinion.What's really special about this book: This author has an acute awareness of what's available in our "normal" American grocery stores and the appliances, counter and pantry space in the "normal" American kitchen. How was she able to so successfully transfer this awareness to her recipes? She paid close attention to her mother's cooking back in the mid-1970's when the family arrived in the US as refugees. No familiar Vietnamese foodstuffs to be found in the neighborhood grocery stores back then, so Vietnamese families adapted American ingredients to mimic what they had been used to in their homeland--a good example of practicality and perseverance and strength of spirit.So, these recipes are unique, distinct and extraordinary: There is not a single ingredient in this Vienamese cook book that can't be found in any all purpose, good-sized neighborhood grocery store. (Well, finding lemongrass might cause you some extra effort, but not much.....and there is always lemongrass paste.)Not only are these recipes mouthwatering, they are fairly easy to accomplish and master. Give me a recipe that tastes great and is quick and easy to make, and I will gladly embrace it. Make them recipes with the Vietnamese flare for balancing flavors and textures, and that's even better.Andrea Nguyen, (last name pronounced "Win") is a fine teacher. She writes with a personable style and has so much worthwhile information to share, that there's no way you'll come away from your first read-through of this book without more knowledge and experience under your belt. And if you are familiar with Nguyen's Pho cook book, you would know to expect the soup recipes in this book to be stellar--and they are.--all ten of them! There are helpful tips on the best store shelf stocks, and how to build a sweet note into a broth.My favorite chapter is Chicken and Seafood: There are a handful of chicken thigh and shrimp recipes that I could live on...... I really did not grasp the concept behind this book, that all the ingredients you just get at Krogers, so if you live in Ohio or Nebraska or somewhere hard to get to an Asian grocery store or you are afraid to go to Asian grocery store, you can make close approximations of Vietnamese dishes. I live a mile from Little Vietnam in Seattle and was really looking for a book to help me understand the myriad of vegetables and ingredients at the markets and how to make some really interesting food. I also LOVE the trend in cookbooks right now to double as travel books with lots of pictures and stories of the place.This book is NOT THAT.Three stars for being well-organized, many recognizable dishes, not threatening or overly-difficult for novice cooks, but I returned it as it was definitely not what I was looking for.

I've always wanted to try making Vietnamese food at home but was afraid I wouldn't be able to find ingredients. The author gives you choices for alternate ingredients for those that might be hard to find. The recipes are mostly quick and she talks you through making them. I've made a few so far and they have been great. The Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream is worth the price of the book alone. I love Vietnamese iced coffee and have been making it for several years, her recipe in the book is very similar. That coffee Ice Cream has many of those same flavors and is so easy to make and tastes like it was made in an ice cream maker although it is made in your freezer.

This cookbook is a great intro to Vietnamese cooking. It's also a great addition even if you already own other ones. Like all of Andrea Nguyen's cookbooks, this book is so well organized and the recipes are thoughtfully written. I've made several of the recipes already and they have all been fantastic. My favorite part is so many of them are completely doable for a quick, weeknight meal.I love how this book got me to think about how to use ingredients that I don't usually associate with Vietnamese food in a new way (for example, salmon, beets, brussel sprouts).I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Vietnamese food or is interested in learning more about it and wants to cook it at home.

I think this is mostly great. The first chapter on consent is amazing. My beef is that threesomes should not be in the basics. To quote, that is varsity level stuff and I'm giving this to my teen for education. He's still at the "am I ready for sex" stage and I think threesomes should wait until the next book. I might just cut those pages out with an exacto and save them for a few years. Also I wish things didn't start with "Hey perverts". If we are trying to give sex education to newbies I don't think that's a good approach. I get that you are trying to reclaim the term, but it sets kind of a negative vibe, implying this stuff is only for perverts. Also auggh I HATE the C word. I'm sure you are trying to reclaim that too, but 99.9% of women are going to be turned off by having their privates called that. Otherwise great job and thank you for trying!

This is a great book to read yourself, or to share with friends who are interested in healthy sex lives.The text accompanying the drawings is easy to understand, conversational in tone, and so lovingly sex-positive. I have a few friends who have married recently but their backgrounds had left them without much knowledge in the bedroom. I have OJST to them several times, but their timid nature scared them away every time. As a book, it was much easier for my friends to take in. I'm not one to ask, but the topic of sex has been a lot more relaxed for the first time since I met them! I would totally reccomend!

I bought this for my 15 yr old daughter hoping to give her what my parents couldn’t or didn’t want to give me. I probably learned 10 or 12 things myself from a quick read through. It’s beautifully illustrated in a fun and approachable way. I love love love the normalization of different body types and sexualities. Everyone should have this book - wish it had been available even sooner!

This is a beautiful, honest, thourough book. It made me uncomfortable at first because I bought it for my older teens and I’ve got hang ups (don’t most of us?) from my own childhood, but I don’t want my hang ups to ultimately hurt my children who deserve better sex-ed than I got. They want and need real answers about sex, not embarrassed, adult runaround or ignorant misinformation from fellow confused peers. If you have little kids, you may not be able to fathom wanting to give a book like this to them someday, (I couldn’t) but now that mine are older I realize that I want them to have whole, happy lives that include healthy intimacy as they choose. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Very interesting book regarding the adeniums growing.

I was looking for plant care but this is nothing but talk of planting seeds with no additional info, waste of time and money, don't bother.

Some interesting facts, some really strange statements, due to being an English version written by a native Spanish speaker. The writer/photographer should definitely continue to create books, but should have a native English speaker do some editing.

Interesting adeniums book. I found specially usefull the chapter 10 regardingthe irrigation and the chapter 8 regarding the luminosity.Special note, the fungicide video referenced in the book, created by the same author.Also it is explained how to plant the seeds. Thanks.
