I have read several of Christopher Rice's novels. I enjoy his style of writing, and the suspense he instills in his stories. I did not like his use of what I call "filler." I am aware that a lot of writers use fillers, and I find that part of a novel boring. I can only assume it is done to make the book longer. If I have never visited the part of the story fillers describe, it does not give me the desire to do so, and reading about how to travel there, is again, boring to me. Nevertheless, I will highly recommend Mr. Rice's novels. They are exciting and suspenseful.

I picked up this book because I love his mother. I've been her fan for years. I expected this book to be more like his mother's style. I was so wrong. This young man writes with his own voice, and with his own vision and talent. This was my first Christopher Rice book. I loved this book. It takes you into the gay community of Hollywood where three young gay men go missing. It brings you into the drug culture that is prevalent in centeral and southern California. This book takes twists and turns, and ties you up in knots, yet some how, he unravels it and turns it into a lovely bow in the end. So exciting that I couldn't put it down. Loved it. Can't wait to read more.

I had trouble finishing this book. So many undeveloped characters that I lost track of who was who as the protagonist investigates the death(s) of underage hustlers in Hollywood. I am a great fan of the author's mother, Anne Rice, and know they collaborate. I suggest they keep working together for his next novel.Trying to figure out who is who in this whodunit was frustrating.

This is one of several books I've read recently about gay men being murdered. (Young Forever: A Gay Mystery is another good one.) As always, Mr. Rice delivers. He kept me guessing!I liked the West Hollywood backdrop that showed the grittier side behind the glitz and glamour. It felt more authentic and real. There were a lot of twists and surprises too.

Because of the twists in this gay themed thriller you are going to find it hard to stop reading. This chase includes West Hollywood, a crashed Marine Corps flight at sea, strange snd powerful manipulative men and just when you think you know what's happening you are off on another chase. Great read. Excellent writing.

Great book. I was captured from start to end, in ways I was not even expecting. The plot is well written and developed and the characters complex enough. I found the "hero" very likable, very real, I loved the way things would happen around him prompting him to action, how in his core he was so generous and yet so stuborn... The scenarios are unfamiliar to me, so the descriptions seem perfect, I have added a few places to my mental picture of California. All and all this was fresh and contemporary and i enjoyed it through out. Highly recomend it.

This is a disappointing book after reading BONE MUSIC. The characters are belaboured and the plot goes jerkilly along.

Books by authors that are gay are often put into the gay section which gets limited attention. I would recommend this book to anyone.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues. Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang. Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

From the Back Cover

“Hine has provided a brief and readable account of the long, complex history of the geologic development that lies beneath the gentle, low topography of Florida. He shows how many subtle features in the Florida landscape were shaped during this history.”—Paul Enos, University of Kansas “Seven hundred million years of time go whizzing by in this beautifully illustrated account of Florida’s geologic history. The story centers on the long and intimate relationship between Florida and her enveloping seas, beginning with wandering continents, continuing through the ‘carbonate factory’ in the sea that produced much of the volume of the Florida Peninsula, and ending with the story of sand grains on Florida beaches hundreds of miles from their points of origin. For those curious about their natural surroundings, Albert Hine’s book will surely open a new window and a new appreciation for the complexity and beauty of nature in Florida.”—Orrin Pilkey, coauthor of Global Climate Change: A PrimerThe saga of Florida’s geological development started approximately 700 million years ago. It began as the state’s basement rocks migrated nearly 12,600 kilometers from their position within a supercontinent at the Earth’s South Pole to their present location north of the equator, participating in the assembly and disassembly of one of Earth’s greatest supercontinents, Pangea. In this complete geologic history of the Sunshine State, Albert Hine takes the reader on a journey that begins with the breaking apart of Pangea and ends with the emergence of south Florida and the Keys; explaining the shape and form of the state as we know it today. Geologic History of Florida chronicles the creation of the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the western Atlantic Ocean, and other major events in Florida’s geologic past. It looks back 160 million years, to a time when the ancient igneous and metamorphic basement rocks were covered by a large sedimentary carbonate platform nearly 3 miles thick, known as the Florida Platform. Today, Florida still rests upon this larger geologic feature, fifty percent of which is submerged. Consequently, the geologic story of the state includes what lies beneath the seafloor as much as it involves the land surface. Writing in a clear and accessible manner, Hine discusses the geologic changes of the Florida Platform, from dissolution tectonics, which formed great underwater caverns and sinkholes, to the plate collision with Cuba. Hine explains geological phenomenon like the influx of quartz-rich sand from the southern Appalachian Mountains that made Florida’s white-sand beaches a destination for tourists from around the world. He examines the state’s phosphate-rich deposits, which account for thirty percent of the world’s phosphate production, and other hot-button issues such as oil drilling and climate change. With a glossary of essential terms at the end of each chapter, Geologic History of Florida will be an invaluable resource for geologists, students of Earth history, and anyone interested in how the Sunshine State physically came to be.

Disclaimer: In the spring of 2013, as a graduate student in Florida Studies at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, I took the course in Geological History of Florida taught by Dr. Albert C. Hine. Dr. Hine is an engaging teacher, whose reach extends far beyond just the bare geological facts of Florida to embrace our participation in its life -- he is an exemplar of an excellent Florida Studies professor, as well as a boots-on-the-ground scientist. He is also thoroughly "Floridated," as I call it, being originally from Massachusetts -- he shows up to class in sandals, shorts, and a Florida-print casual shirt. That's how we roll in Florida. This book, in manuscript, was the main text for the class. The finished product is impressive. The abundant and lavish illustrations blend with and illuminate the text well, as did the slides in Dr. Hine's lectures in class. On the first front pages are three handy references: a geologic time scale, a graph of sea level through time, and a geologic map of Florida. Throughout the book, other useful references appear, such as a conversion table of English to metric measurement. At the end of each chapter are lists of "Essential Points to Know," "Essential Terms to Know," "Keywords" [sic], and "Essential References to Know." Paying attention to these lists will enhance understanding of the text.Chapter One begins with the essential Florida Studies question: What is Florida? Dr. Hine, in this chapter, answers the question geologically. You'll be surprised at the actual geologic scope of Florida. In Chapter Two, he moves on to the beginning of the story of Florida's geologic history, 700 million years ago! As a result of his lecture and his illustrations, as reproduced in this chapter, I understand Pangea and Gondwanaland much more than I ever did before. By the end of the book, the reader has a much greater understanding and appreciation for Florida.I highly recommend this book not only for students of Florida Studies, and Floridians generally, but for anyone interested in any aspect of the Earth sciences.

Very well written, understandable in ways that have stuck with me.

I am enjoying this book, but was disappointed that the author did not include information about the heavy mineral sands mining in the state.

What everyone else said.

The Geologic History of Florida is a wonderful introduction to the geology and natural history of one of our country’s most popular destinations. Written by a geological oceanography professor at the University of South Florida, the book provides enough rigor and detail to satisfy someone with a background in the subject but is also highly accessible to the educated layman with an interest in Florida in particular and geology in general. The author, Albert Hine, discusses the origin of Florida’s beautiful quartz sands while explaining the weathering of mountains; he explains how Florida and its Caribbean neighbors arrived at their current locations through the jigsaw puzzle process of plate tectonics; he explains how the carbonate substructure and abundant vegetation leads to the ubiquitous sinkholes and how ancient sea creatures have made Florida the world leader in phosphate production. Hine also addresses topics of concern to current residents of Florida, including water, climate change and offshore oil drilling.I was especially impressed by the structure of the book, which combines the best features of a textbook such as straightforward organization, hierarchical presentation of information, and frequent definition of terms, with a highly readable and enthusiastic writing style. The author has divided the book up into short, easily digestible topics arranged in chronological order starting about 700 million years ago and continuing up to the present (and into the future!). At the end of each chapter are a series of summary statements that reinforce central concepts and a glossary of terms from that chapter. Hine also provides an extensive reference list at the end of each chapter. The works listed include technical journal articles, textbooks, general interest books, and technical reports. When possible, he has included digital object identifiers (doi) so that the reader can locate material online.Although Hine does not presume prior knowledge of geology, he does not shy away from the use of technical language or concepts. Instead he takes time to define terms and introduces new ideas in a simple, gradual way. As someone with scientific training, but not in the field of geology, I appreciated how the author did not oversimplify complex ideas or trivialize scientific uncertainties. The University Press of Florida spared no expense in illustrating this attractive book. There is barely a page without one or more color photographs (some helpfully annotated), schematic diagrams, or figures from historical or modern research articles. The figures greatly enhance the factual content and express ideas that words cannot. Although technical figures can sometimes be daunting, I found it highly worth my time to read the captions and examine the figures and photographs carefully as I went along. As a college educator in a different scientific field, I think this textbook would serve undergraduates very well because of its structure, focus and attractive layout. It is the perfect length for a one-semester course and if you live in or near Florida, it would be an excellent companion for geological field trips. Similarly, a layman traveling to Florida or the Caribbean would doubtless enjoy tracking down some of the formations and features described in this book.

Sertillanges masterfully unites the familiar stories of the Gospels to the peculiar circumstances and geographical surroundings of Christ's life. These stories, combined with his lyrical descriptions of the Holy Land, bring vividly to life those secret and holy places sanctified by our Lord, and will deepen your prayerful meditations and enrich your spiritual reading.Happy are those who have stood in the cave in Bethlehem, walked in prayer the roads that Jesus walked, and knelt at the tomb of our Redeemer. Now the rest of us who have never visited Israel can open the rich pages of 33 Years in the Holy Land and gaze in silence at the crib in Bethlehem, hear Jesus say to the dismayed fishermen, "Follow me!," and feel the chill of Golgotha as it looms ever larger in His mind.Take up these pages. Let these reflections deepen your meditations on the life of Christ and fill you with gratitude for His tremendous love for you. Your faith will grow stronger, your meditations richer, and your prayers more fervent and more frequent.
